A simple, yet plausible question for the_reverend.

You say you dislike sports and athletics because you
'don't like watching sweaty men run around and rub into eachother.'

But you go to the gym quite often and talk about how much you're deadlifting. Assumimg you have someone to spot you, and you spot someone else, Y U NO MAKE SENSE. Lifting weights is for physical conditioning; sports are, for the most part, phsyically conditioned people playing an organized game for entertainment. EXPLAIN YOUSELF.

VALID QUESTION IS VALID, DUMB THREAD IS DUMB.

Aril misses the boat. I don't talk to or interact with anyone at the gym. You obviously don't know what deadlifts are if you think you need a spotter. If you have issues while deadlifting, let go of the bar (granted that would probably f up your back worse than gently putting the bar down).

Next, I'm. Perfectly fine with PLAYING sports. If you like a sport, get off your ass and play sports. Sitting there and watch other dudes work out is what I don't get. Downfall of fatmeria.

I haven't deadlifted since my highschool basketball days.. felt it was a little unnecessary for what I was trying to do. shit blew my back out, too. I was more into leg presses after that. Fuck working on legs, though. Also, the gym is great for checking guys out, hence the_reverend and andrewbastards frequent use of it.

ON TO SERIOUS QUESTION NOW:

What is your routine? One day of lifting, one day of cardio? Or do you mix it up? It's been nearly five years since I was a gym regular, I NEED to go again. It's funny, though, I've gained 50 lbs since then and I feel I'm stronger than when I lifted.

Beer gives you natural strength, but beer muscle weighs a lot more than workout muscle.

We've determined in this thread that you can't spot for deadlifts.

Though, you can spot for squats, and I can vouch for the fact that it looks very, very gay.

I get a pinching feeling between my shoulder blades when I bench. someone said to change my grip to a narrower grip, but it doesn't seem to help much.

my "routine" if you can call it that is that I go 1 day a week to "maintine" and 2 days a week to "improve". I want to try to do 20 minutes of cardio every morning and mix up running, burpees, cycling, etc.... but it hasn't happened yet.
Tuesdays, I go
1) 1.5 miles running to warm up
2) sets of 10 lat pull down/set of 10 dips (repeat 3x)
3) sets of 10 butterfly like machine/reverse delts (repeat 3x)
4) sets of 10 that thing where you pull down in front of you/straight bar curls (repeat 3x)
5) sets of 10 pull down cable in front of me with each arm/inner flexors/outter flexors/hatchet chooper/each arm pull down palm down/each arm pull down palm up (repeat 3x)
and then if I have time
6) sets of 10 deadlifts/(30 decline situps)/squats/bench press (repeat 3x)
7) max out deadlifts
8) drink alcohol

on the other day I go (either thurs/fri/sat), I usually make something up like
run a mile, curls, 3 different barbell freeweights, deadlifts, situps, something with the cablemachine, squats, stepping up on a bench and lifting a weight over my head
and then repeat that til I either run out of time/can't breath/almost puke.

THANK YOU. Watching sports is watching people excel at an organized athletic competition. You either love the game or don't.

I feel that a lot of people don't like sports because they don't know the rules. But alas, it can also be seen as a waste of time being a spectator because the spectator isn't actively doing anything.
Baseball is the slowest moving sport, but I fucking love the game. It's so much more than people tossing a ball around.

I use to be a big fan of the leg press when I was an avid lifter. My lower back has always been weak so squats just didn't do it for me.

ProTip: go 4 days a week and don't squeeze in so much stuff. Also, you're doing too much back work. You also have a chest, arms, shoulders -- don't concentrate so much on deads, pulldowns, rows, etc.

So let's say you switch to a 4 day routine -- do something like:

Mon - Chest/Triceps
Wed - Back/Biceps
Thursday - Legs
Friday - Shoulders

It doesn't have to be exactly that, but you get what I mean. Doing different body parts on different days allows more time for recovery, and hence growth.

Finally, if you're going to Planet Fitness, stop immediately and go find another gym.

I agree on the pizza thing, therefore, I don't eat the pizza.

I also think the whole "judgement free zone" thing is a joke. If it's truly a judgement free zone, why do you have an alarm that goes off every time some grunts too loud, or drop weights?

However, like I said, it's cheap. I've given up on working out before, I'd rather waste as little money as possible instead of spending more money going to a "real" gym.

Don't know if I'd go that far. I don't use spots basically because I don't do gargantuan single reps for gains, and I don't like the idea of having a workout partner.

BUT. I could probably up my bench by a lot in a much quicker period of time if I used spotters and didn't have to be as conservative in planning what I can lift for the amount of reps I want. It's a lot of fun when it's 10:00 at night, you've got a failed bench rep resting on your throat, and the only other dude in the gym is a dopey asian guy who bows and smiles every time I yell at him to help me get the fucking barbell off my neck.

Using a spotter >>>>> Getting stapled to the bench.

It's not only good to use a spot for super heavy weight, but also for getting a few extra reps out of your set. The key is having an experienced spotter, not the overweight 20-something douche that wears Tapout gear every day and tries to look tough.

You always want to ask for a body-building spot over a powerlifting spot. Body-building spots keep you moving, powerlifting spots wait until you've been stapled, then pick the weight up.

While I agree with the above statement, I wouldn't want to be doing situps in a vat of cat piss (rev's house)

I've gone the bodyweight only exercising route before. It didn't work. I went maybe 4-5 months just doing bodyweight stuff at home and doing 6 mile runs 3+ times a week to supplement my Muay Thai.

The results were no good. I gassed out more. I had more trouble doing pushups when I was gassed, and I was getting tossed around/outlasted by dudes of a similar body type to mine that did lift.

After I returned to lifting I saw my strength increase dramatically. The typical warmdown at my old MT gym was 100 pushups/100 situps/100 squats after 2 hours of training. The only times I could stomach that were when I was regularly lifting weights.

That and situps/squats/burpees etc gets really goddamn boring after a while. Lifting at least mixes it up a little and makes it interesting. By no means am I condemning essential exercises like burpees and squats. But mental motivation is so important. I watch people do the 7 minutes of burpees challenge and just sit there and wonder how they can stand it.

A power cage would fall right through the floor of my shitty apartment and would crush my first floor neighbors

Not everyone has good solid crown molding for mounting a pullup bar on their door

Some people can better focus on their workout when there isn't a TV/computer/bideo games/kids/pets/roommates in their face, too.

Well how would you even know if it was random? Watching sports sucks btw because the simple answer is not everyone likes the same shit as you, aril.

yummy said:You guys are all fucking gay. If you have a gym membership it implies you are too dumb to realize you can do most of your exercises at home. Sure, it's convenient having all that equipment but if you can't support your own weight you're unhealthy. If you can't do several pull ups but bench 300 fuck you. Last I checked, pushups, situps, pullups, stretching, running, and such can be done for free. I lift RTTP'ers up and put them down.

Actually I can do several pull-ups with a weighted chain hanging around my waist. I can also bench 315 for multile reps. Good luck with your at home Jane Fonda routine.

The Muay Thai gym I'm at now has its own S&C program. Some days are really fun when you work in kettlebells, heavy bag drills, those big giant ropes, tire slams etc. Then there are other days where all we do are a billion burpees, walkout pushups, jump tucks, etc and all I'm thinking the whole time is 'Why aren't we using any of this cool shit?!'

No, that post is just chock full of arrogant "look at the badass shit I can do, you pussies," and I'm just calling you out on it.

Also, "Planet Gayness" is extremely clever. I'm sure a 7 year old couldn't have come up with that on his own.

Yes, I answered an arrogant post with a little bit of arrogance, but I'm not a "fucking meathead". I've lifted for a long time, it's part of my life, and I take it fairly seriously.

And PF is still gay.

I do solely body resistance exercises. Pushups, situps, dips, pullups, rockclimbing etc. Does this make me a fag?

I also jerkoff in the tanning booth so I get full UV coverage on my junk. That's not gay right?

Better question: When your kid gets old enough to play sports and he's on a team does that make you gay if your cheering for him/them?
