Dear Count Varghalfass,
I really liked your older work. It was a unique combination of grandiose atmosphere coupled with raw emotional waves - if you will - which can sometimes be hard to find in metal.
This latest work, however, seems a tad weak. It fails to encompass the atmosphere in your previous works and also seems a little rushed and/or half-assed. Please take a little more time on your next release. While you're at it, you might want to search within yourself to find your muse again.

IF you told me this was just some other band I would like it. But compared to Burzum's older work it does not stack up. But I do like this so far for what it is I suppose. I'm half way through. The riffs are good but the atmosphere is gone. Its not the same.

I definitely don't hate Belus but it doesn't reach the standards he once set. It feels like there are some good ideas that unfortunately went underdeveloped. His anguished screams have been replaced with ordinary black metal vocals. There's no synth, a lack of subtleties, and the atmosphere suffers because of it. There are some really cool riffs contained within but from an aesthetic standpoint, he's lacking the key ingredients needed to allow Belus to stand among his timeless works.

I pretty much agree down the line with everything MikeOV just said.
The first 35 seconds of Lost Wisdom make my hair stand on end every time and do more for me than this entire new album. Oh well you can't touch greatness I suppose.

I dunno, it's not bad. No "Aske" or "Filosofem" but better for sure than "Daudi Baldurs" and the other albums where he dinked around with a key-tar and everybody called it "atmosphere."
I mean, was anybody really expecting him to "save" black metal from where it's gone or "turn back the clock" to the old Norway sound? Fuhgeddaboudit.
Regardless it'll sell like hotcakes.

I downloaded it the other day. I've had some frustrating difficulties lately, long hours at work, and various stress that peaked with news of a second death in the family. There was an hour long drive to take, so the new Burzum was oddly perfect. Maybe it was because I was in the right state of mind, but I liked it.
For someone that hasn't played a guitar in years, he does a good job. The mid paced tempos work. I especially like the long droning/repetitious last instrumental.
