______________________________________ [Oct 21,2006 7:49pm - the_reverend ""] the best thing thus far is the icreased number of mass people here. Typically this would be a terrible thing, but in this case, they have been trained not to smoke at shows for 4 years so the smoke level isn't very high here... Yet... I'm sure everyone will drink that inhibition away very shortly. another thing that is awesome is the sheer number of people in the back looking through CDs. best thing ever. bernie is totally cool with distros setting up and this has completely increased the traffic in the back of the club with people shopping through the distro(s) and then going on to the band's stuff. I really would love to see more shows with more distro set ups. just look at the increased number of people! I'm sure the band's sales will reflect it too. frozen: I got in a couple minutes after they started. the front was already prett pact AND They sounded great for the opening band. Usually, bands here sound terrible when they get the first slot. I'm hoping that this is a sign of the proficiency of the sound guy and not just the talent of the musicians. And what talent. These guys mix together some cheesier metal characterists with kickass progressive metal music. I always want to catagories them, but it's hard to find a match. The closest would probably be nevermore, but with children of bodom's keyboards (oh, I'm sure some day pete will get one of those swiveling keyboard stands!). colin even sung a part to a song. They didn't end with the cover. Probably one of their smartest ideas. I mean, it's fun and all, but then you get pigeon-holed as the band that plays the van halen cover. Now that their newest CD is out, they have no excuse to always play "the cover". |
______________________________________ [Oct 21,2006 9:39pm - the_reverend ""] Dreaded Silence: ken was beaming on stage. it took them a little while to set up on stage, but then they got started with ken's "scary" death metal voice. As far as I can remember, this is the first time I've seen them on a killer sound system. knowing the audience that was there, I think the accursed shirt was a little too much pandering to you crowd. C'mon 1/2 the people screaming in the front were either in that band or married to it! In the end, dreadken told about his lust for katatonia. A lust that he's hidden from all of us for all these years. Also, that it was 7 years ago today that DS was started. eulogy xl: progressive nu metal. Does that make sense? Sort of the way that tool does things but not the same at all. they had samples that played in between their songs. I liked that part a lot. They had some parts that sounded like burst (swedish band), but then the singing was more godsmackish. I know that's not the correct correlation, but whatever. Some parts that couls be consided breakdowns (compared to the bands on this show), but nothin moshy. I'm going to hve to listen to the myspace cause the reviews of that were a lot different. They also had a catch phrase; get loud. shroud of bereavement: holy cow. They had a huge crowd for them. I'm serious. It was really had to move around in the front. For those people wondering why markDIE looked so different, it was the shiney gold band on his finger. I know it's hard to realize this face when he's not in a suit, but mark is now taken til death does he part. Their set went off with out a hitch and with only 15 minutes of set up time. 3 songs, I think. Jen (most know her as the "original" singer) was with them. She sounded just as good as she used to. it was odd looking straight at kel at the bar while dan was on stage talking about jen. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 21,2006 10:02pm - the_reverend ""] daylight dies: I haven't seen these guys in 4 years. They sounded awesome. I mean, the local bands sounded good... But not as loud as these guys. there is usually a switch in sound when the headliners set on the stage and it definitely happened here. Very loud and very impressive. I think it's the backline/full cabs they had going on. Their new CD is so much better than the old CD. I remember the first CD sounding more 70-doom/stoner. Now, it's more like amon amarth doom. I wouldn't even say it was the same band! Like with a lot of bands, I feel sorry for the bands that have to play after them. Fortunately, most times when I think that, the next band does out do them. Let's see. At the end of their set, the sound guy told them that they only had 5 minutes left. When they relayed the fact that they could only play one more song, the crowd roared back "no! One more song!" and "play more!". That's my opinion too. They needed to play longer. much longer. |
______________________________________ [Oct 22,2006 1:23am - the_reverend ""] katatonia: after the first song it's pretty obvious that they stole their sound from dreaded silence. Not sure what is up with that. Seriously now, there is a complete difference between the newest CD and their older stuff. Everything just smacks of tool. I know people are going to jump on me for that, but geez.. So obvious. Anyhow, the rest of the set was better song selection-wise, but the sound sucked compared to daylight dies. It was just missing that mega charged, "in your face" sound that daylight had. I think they must have sound check playing softer stuff or something. Katatonia's dynamic range is a lot wider that daylight so this just missed it completely. If they had cranked everything, it would have been a hell of a lot better. they played 50 minutes but it seemed so short. yet another band that got yelled at to play more. Ps: my katatonia pictures sucked. There were way too many people there rocking out for me to get around. I guess you can always tell the best attended bands at mark's cause my pictures of that band are always the worst. |

C'mon 1/2 the people screaming in the front were either in that band or married to it! Ouch dude. That's pretty harsh. I only did it because Jon made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I wont elaborate beyond saying it involved him doing things which might be considered "unsavory". Honestly though it seemed fair since they drove all the way up ther to see the show and to a certain degree helped us promote it. I might as well bee a walking billboard for them for a night. Plus the shirt was clean, an uncomming thing right now among my clothes since I don't have any quarters to wash anything. |

__________________________________ [Oct 22,2006 8:19am - sinistas ""] What can I say about this show? Daylight Dies = FUCKING AMAZING. They nailed everything. I was in awe. Katatonia was great. Too bad they had to go on after Daylight Dies. A decent mix of songs from LFDGD, Viva Emptiness, and the new disc. Shroud sounded killer. It's amazing to hear them with a sound system worth its salt. Dan Clarke looks fucking WEIRD with short hair. haha From what I heard of Frozen and Eulogy (we were undercutting the other bands with $10 tickets) XL, they sounded good, but really didn't fit on this show. Jesse from Daylight Dies said that he would have liked one or two local openers. The place still would have been packed. All I'm sayin'. Our set, let's see...Mike's tubes died. Thank god we had his pod, so we could run it direct. I thought we played well, and the crowd gave us a great response (especially after heavier stuff). Can't really ask for more. Thanks to everybody that came out, especially our New Bedford contingent as well as my pops. Not that he'll ever read this, but it was hilarious seeing him up on the barricade during Daylight Dies and Katatonia. And massive thanks as always to Aaron for the great pics. OH! Ken had a fangirl moment with Jonas of Katatonia. I've never seen him as happy, ever. Rocketh on. |
______________________________ [Oct 22,2006 11:43am - pam ""] What an awesome show. I am thrilled that it was overrun by Massholes. (the smoke never got as bad as it was at Dismember, either) Frozen was killer, I've been trying to see them for a long time and not surprisingly they got put on an hour earlier than they were supposed to. BUT this time...I anticipated something happening and showed up early. This did cut into my drinking in the parkinglot time. I like to make a staggering entrance, after all. Dreaded Silence. Also killer. Ken looked like he might either start squealing like a schoolgirl or pass out cold at any moment. They naturally had some technical problems, as if the anxiety of opening for Katatonia and hoping your members arrived on time wasn't enough. They sounded pretty good, too. Whoever was doing sound that night should do it always. They got a great crowd response and there was nothing wrong with The Accursed shirt. You're just mad it wasn't a RTTP shirt, Aaron. That XL band was awful. Just awful. Shroud sounded great. I've seen them a dozen times and this is the first time I could hear everyone nice and clear. They more or less fit on the stage, too. I wasn't too into the singer, she reminds me of Snow White. I did notice (now that I could hear her) that the keyboard player has a beautiful voice, I wish she sang more. They did great, I'm happy for them. Daylight Dies were awesome! I wasn't crazy over their first CD and I'd seen them before sometime. They were one of those "just OK" bands to me. I was going to play pool or something but they sucked me right in. They kicked ass. I'll have to check out their new stuff. Katatonia. Fucking Katatonia. They should have played for 3 hours. I had two dudes behind me singing along to everything and it was awesome. The whole crowd was so happy to be there they forgot to be metal and angry. The band were outside while we were waiting an eternity for a friend's ride to show. George and Rachael ran over to have fanboy/girl moments, too. Fuck Moonspell. |
