a 256MB nVidia will do nothing to help with video editing/cleaning up over a 32MB card.

If you are doing video edit, I would say that you should put another GB of DDR2 in there.
the most important things for video editing
1) hard drive pipe/speed (SATA is basically the best a consumer can do)
2) RAM
and if you are going anything amazing with the video
3) CPU speed

If you go to circuitcity, you can get a USB video transfer box for $50-100 that will do VGA into your computer from all your old VHS.

He is not ready to do video editing yet. When he is ready, more ram will be purchased when the price comes down.
His current demand on video performance has resulted in on *machines with shared resources*, "low video memory" or "out of memory" messages.
I must partially disagree with your statement, "a 256mb nVidia will do nothing to help". This 256mb video card and another gig of ram, together will help with video memory required to perform the tasks he will wish to complete. Granted you expect an IBM compatible machine to handle the processes that really should be done on the correct form of equiptment, such as a macintosh.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/m...aker/expert/dunn_03august11_vc.mspx

"A system with a cheap and underpowered video card will be very sluggish in all Windows tasks, including video-editing applications. So although a 3-D video card won't truly accelerate your video editing, a capable 3-D video card will make your entire computing experience much easier and will accelerate the rendering process if you're using 3-D transitions. It will also help with DVD playback and will reduce the CPU load when playing back video files. Some cards (such as the ATI RADEON 9700 Pro) have the ability to remove digital artifacts from video, enhancing the visual quality. If you have a low-end computer with a built-in video card on the motherboard, there's an even more compelling reason to upgrade to a new video card: your system is probably using shared RAM. This means that the on-board video card borrows from your main system RAM, which reduces the RAM you have available for video editing, which slows everything down."

so.. you disagree with my statement and then poser something to back "my side" up?

first: DVD-play back with be better on this old 32MB ATI card (which is oncard ie: "not shared") I have cause it's got a true DVD decoder card built in. the geforece 6800 no longer does. they have partnered with microsoft and do alot of their shit in software and slanted towards the ms WMV format (which is a modified version of mpeg layer 4), BUT it's all software based (the geforce 6600 has hardware decoders for all this).

second: the reason that everyone is up the ass of apple for video editing and stuff is cause apple used to be the best at this. now, it doesn't matter and in some ways, PCs are much better. 5 years ago, I would have said go with a MAC for that. Now, MACs have watered down and thinned their blood line. all the hardware inside a MAC is the same as your PC. the only thing that a MAc has over a PC is the way that they simulate a more than 32bits on system. they run 2 64bit memory channels in parallel for a 128bit memory pipe. windows can't even deal with a single 64bit arch.
bottom-line: MACs status appeal is the only thing keeping it around. that includes the iPod. and yes, I have a MAC.

in the end, it doesn't matter. the computer you got will handle everything that you need to do with it and more. I suggest going and getting a PVR USB product. this will give you an easily usable way to TX video, but also give you software like a TV to record TV shows.

Aaron knows his business. I'd also recommend some more RAM or faster processor. Can't do much about changing HDD type in a dell, but the 7200rpm SATA should be fine. The only other thing you could do is buy a raptor unless something faster is out now, I haven't read my tech articles lately.

Also, the GeForce 6800/GT/Ultra do have a hardware encoder on them named PureVideo but it actually costs money to buy the software to unlock it and take use of it. The article I read said the advantages bacilli weren't worth the money, though.

Yeah, they're not cheap. Although I'd imagine they'll be coming down in price now that the 7800's are out. Christ, when I bought my 6800GT last year it cost me $500. They just came out and I couldn't find them anywhere. I was originally going to get an Ultra but doom3 was like a week away from coming out so I spent $100 more than it should have been and got a BFG 6800GT OC. I think they were supposed to be like $430 at that point but I got raped for $70 in order to play doom on time.

...it was totally worth it.

well, yes and no. they aren't getting the ultra (which is under $500), but isn't available in x16 pci express.
the version they are gettig is on pricegrabber, selling for $200s without any deals off it and I did one search putting it at $200-ish.

sorry, I read here:
http://www.overclockers.com/tips00681/
and they talk about the WMV hardware excelleration being missing from the 6800 (although they claim it does) and the 6600 doing it. but that's not got anything to do with DVDs so i suck. then again, theirs doesn't say it's an ultra... or a dual video out for that matter.

I would be willing to bet that they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 7200rpm sata and a 10K/15K rpm sata raptor/cheetah whatever.
you only increase your access/seek times by 10-30%. Just keep your hard drives defragged and the 7.2Ks will work awesome.

once they start recording/editing HUGE files, it's all going to be hard drive speed. RAM won't matter since the files can be 1GB/minute uncompressed video. the videos that jim will be recording will be at 120 minutes/4gb (compressed video). maybe at that point, 2GB will matter, but, windows doesn't freaking use over 1GB very efficently. at that point, I would get another SATA drive (possibly a raptor/raptor2) and put my scratch pad on it.

They keep changing all the options available. When the 8xAGP 6800's came out they only had 128MB on them. Now there are some with 256MB. I didn't even know about the 512MB PCI-e Ultras until I saw one while I was dicking around on newegg a month or so ago.

[Jul 26,2005 2:03pm - the_reverend ""]
well, I'm guessing their memory map on the boards "can" go to 1024MB atleast... but will it use it?
nope... but then again 512MB? I would love to see one of those RAM usage monitors over a month of normal usage or even game usage on it. my old 32MB ATI had so much free memory on it when running quake I and II with openGL. I have a 128 or 256 on a computer now.. but it doesn't do anthing.

When those cards were coming out nVidia made a big deal about the video decoder on it. It was like 8 months later that they finally released the drivers for it though.

AnandTech said:Eight months.

We'll let you think about that once more.

Eight months.

Eight months have passed since NVIDIA introduced the GeForce 6800 and its Video Processor and today, after eight long months of waiting with no explanation, we can finally take advantage of it. The wait is over, NVIDIA's PureVideo DVD decoder and drivers are publicly available for download. GeForce 6 owners can finally take advantage of the ~20 million transistors set aside for NVIDIA's "Video Processor" through the driver and codec that are being released today.

AnandTech said:There are two parts to the software side of PureVideo - the GPU driver and the PureVideo DVD decoder. The driver is simply a version of the ForceWare 67.01 driver, the PureVideo DVD decoder is the latest update to NVIDIA's NVDVD decoder - version 1.00.65. The GPU driver is obviously available free to the public, while the PureVideo DVD decoder sells for $19.99 due to associated royalties. The PureVideo DVD decoder is available as a 30-day free trial from NVIDIA's website.

Here's that article: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2305

It was well worth the $$$. I had a Dell Trinitron 19" before. It's not quite as CLEAR as a CRT, but it's much less hurtful to your eyes after long periods of time. I tried hooking my CRT at work and I couldn't take it for longer than 5 minutes. It's just sitting on the floor behind me now. I don't think I'll ever go back to CRT's.
