MD Death Fest official recap thread Day 1[views:17095][posts:61]Sonar (Baltimore, MD) - [alarum][anata][butcher_abc][catheter][cenotaph][cliteater][demilich][electro_quarterstaff][embryonic_cryptopathia][gorgasm][haemorrhage][machetazo][municipal_waste][randomshots][sanitys_dawn][skinless][vital_remains] __________________________________ [May 27,2006 1:30pm - succubus ""] Ok... the reverend asked me to make this thread... |
____________________________________ [May 27,2006 2:04pm - Kinslayer ""] Marci called me like an hour agoand said Embryonic Cryptopathia were about to go on... |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 3:33pm - the_reverend ""] any one not here is a friggin retard. this show is amazing. a highlight thus far is the mens bathroom and getting to piss all over atreyu's face in the urinal. embryonic cryptopathia: carina and I were stuck outside waiting for passes during their set. That sucked. I kept hoping it was a CD cause it sounded awesome, so clean. But then I heard Jay's (hirudinea) scream over everything. He's got a very distinct vocie. I snapped a few shots when I ran inside and they were packing up. electro_quarterstaff: no vocals and no bass. They only had guitars (3 of them) and drums. The middle guitar player made some crazy faces. All but the second (or third) song sounded like old entombed with out the vocals. Lots of old school almost groovey, march paced metal. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 3:36pm - the_reverend ""] cenotaph: from turkey. I saw them on the second MDF line up and was pissed that I missed them. I ordered their 6-song a long, long time ago. Never thought I would get to see them. they pretty much just stood there on stage, but I don't care. That completely ruled. Looking at their setlist, I only knew one of the titles they played, but that's cause they only wrote down one word of their paragraph long song titles. the 3rd song (it has a > on the set list) was a new one. it was weird. in the center, the song broke open and they put in a slam part. it got people moving, but was kind oddly placed. the singer's vox was absolute brutal and bottomless. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 3:48pm - the_reverend ""] catheter: awesome grind songs. I heard them on WNYU a few times. The live set very killer. All 3 guys sang which gave the songs completely different sound. One of the guys had a higher "anal cunt" or "dropdead" like voice. Also, the drummer made the most rediculous faces. cliteater: I got confused when they said something about canada, but I got set straight by carina and erica (dehumanized). I swear I saw that singer before. He sung with one of the bands on the inhume show. (dwyer vindicated me and said it was inhume). They reminded me a lot of anoxia (if dan would jump). |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 5:12pm - the_reverend ""] municipal waste: rumors of their non-appearance have been exagerated. they definitly were there and did play. this wasn't a real MW fanbase show. regardless, the crowd were nuts for them. They tossed their assorted paraphenelia into the crowd; beer hats, funnels, beat up boogie board. All of these, if they came back at all, came back in pieces. the security didn't know what to do about them and kept ripping them out of the audience. the first crowd surfer was coming over onto me. Until I tried catching him. I banged my camera which made me a little miffed. Their set was fun though. Great guys, great tunes. sanitys_dawn: grind-ish hardcore songs. A lot of people in the audience left during their set. There were plenty of people cheering, but mixed in were people making fun of the hardcore yell. It reminded me of the yell that devonTYAG did in a few of the latter TYAG songs. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 5:13pm - the_reverend ""] I've now seen everyone from the NE scene who matters. amazing exodus people! |

______________________________ [May 27,2006 5:32pm - blue ""] i hate you. i just got out of work. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 6:01pm - the_reverend ""] I stand by my words. if you don't like it, voice your complaints tomorrow in baltimore md between 11am and noon |
____________________________________ [May 27,2006 6:02pm - RichHorror ""] Yikes. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 6:06pm - Anthony nli ""] "Hens Love Roosters, Geese Love Ganders, Everyone else loves Ned Flanders! Not me! (spoken by Homer) Everyone who counts loves Ned Flanders!" |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 6:07pm - Anthony nli ""] the only band I'm really upset about missing is Anata but Destruction will make up for that. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 7:25pm - the_reverend ""] gorgasm: this is the second time I've seen these guys. The last time (so I've been told) had a different drummer and you could actually pick out all the guitar riff (and that was in the bombshelter). this time, it was more a wall of noise. Also, the drums killed before. I think he wasn't using triggers and the guy before used triggers. Actually, after seeing skinless and listening to it from the back, disregard my comments. The back of the room has the worst sound ever. All the bass converges back there and makes it into a wall of noise. blech! |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 7:28pm - the_reverend ""] skinless: ok, there set was awesome. That girl in the mask came out AND kyle (mucopus) and fucked around on the stage, beating the crap out of each other (and amost knocking over joe and noah at the same time). Jason came out with a mask on to and then almost immediately went into the crowd, using that handy wireless mic. at the end of their set, jason went to the bar. Somehow, I missed it and ran back to the from of the stage to snap shots of some dude who was on stage. You kept hearing jason yelling things, but I had no idea where it was coming from. I missed it big time. Especially when he jumped. like I said in the other review, all the bass convrged in the back. their kick drum was painful in the back of the room. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 8:22pm - the_reverend ""] alarum: this guys don't always get the best crowd response, but they are an awesome band and pull off the best athiest cover ever. I think it's cause they pull out the proggie "weather channel" stuff when they first hit the stage. As their set progresses towards the middle, they get heavier and heavier and definitly sound like a "willowtip" band. "this goes out to all you kangaroo lovers." but there was no mention of the yard. I guess they have forgotten. |
______________________________________ [May 27,2006 8:29pm - the_reverend ""] butcher_abc: fucking awesome. They all came out and tthe guitarist and bassist both had gas masks on with microphones embedded in them. The vocals were heavily pitch-shifted throug the gas mask. After a song or two, the guitarist took off his mask and started using the mic. he used it to shouting crazy things in a language that few in this hemisphere understand. The crowd packed back in from dinner. |
_______________________________________ [May 27,2006 11:03pm - the_reverend ""] anata: longest GD setup time ever. this is one of the only proggy deathmetal bands that actually sounds awesome live. The set was kind of ruined for me cause non photo people were inside the photo-pit and I was sick of getting pictures of people's hands. I listened to the rest of the set outside. It sounded so good outside. machetazo: these guys played perfectly and ignored all the spanish being shouted at them from the audience. it was so much longer than the other night. The set was kind of ruined for me cause non photo people were inside the photo-pit and I was sick of getting pictures of people's hands. I walked out side for a minute to get air, see carina, and listen to it from outside. When I cameback in, there were people from spatterhouse, municipal waste and others on the stage, shooting super soakers. That was hilarious. |
______________________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:13am - DrinkHardThrashHard ""] People were actually shouting Spanish at Machetazo? How clever. |
_______________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:19am - the_reverend ""] yeah, and at haemorrhage too. at this point a someone got stabbed in the face in front of deepsend records so he made haste, packed up, and left. Also, security went into the photopit and cleared it out YES! That made me really happy. I actually wanted to bitch about it, but didn't and it took care of itself. demilich: ok, raise your hands if you've waiting 10+ years to see these guys. Even dave witte was on the side watching and said they are his favorite band. a year or so ago, someone posted the link to demilich demos that re-wet my appitite for this band. anyhow, beside some sound problems (with one of the guitar levels), the only think I didn't like was that the singer seemed a little too drunk. other than that, amazing. Demilich has come a long way from the old raw black metal demos. Keith mutiney hit it on the head saying it sounded like old carcass. It completely reminded me of some of the old school carcass videos I've seen on youtube.com. |
______________________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:22am - DrinkHardThrashHard ""] I have waited 10 years to see them, and I only have to wait until Tuesday I think a lot of their jazzy, groovy riffs make them a lot different than Carcass, and the frog vocals, but then I haven't seen them live. |
_______________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:49am - the_reverend ""] it just sounded like that era of music. 10s and it was worth it. so good. |
_____________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:54am - BornSoVile ""] DEMILICH is an amazing band. If they weren't coming to O'briens, I woulda went on a limb to spend $300+ to see them. |
______________________________________ [May 28,2006 1:49am - the_reverend ""] the block is like a friggin warzone. millions of cops block everything and driving really fast everywhere. I must say that all the cops were really nice. |
______________________________________ [May 28,2006 2:28am - the_reverend ""] ok, I just got in. working on like 103183081230 pictures. give me a few. |
_____________________________________________ [May 28,2006 3:03am - Keith in baltimore ""] ps- that girl was a dude... |
______________________________________ [May 28,2006 3:17am - the_reverend ""] pictures are processing and will be uploaded shortly. |
________________________________ [May 28,2006 3:43am - beelze ""] how was vital???? |
_____________________________________ [May 28,2006 10:49am - Kinslayer ""] This is the main reason I wish I was there....distros! I see like 10 pathces there that I want. [img] |
_______________________________________ [May 28,2006 12:59pm - the_reverend ""] haemorrhage: awesome! They filled the general surgery slot of MDF this year. The singer hopped around like a bloody monkey on stage. He was hilarious and had a rad pepe spanish accent. For some reason, I thought the girl did back up vocals. Guess I was wrong. During the beginning of their set, the Drummer broke something and they had to sitdown for a while to fix it. The crowd screamed and thrashed as the band played a million songs about different medical proceedures. these guys completely had the crowd's minds in their hands.. or atleast someone's mind.. in a jar. weird. |
______________________________________ [May 28,2006 1:04pm - the_reverend ""] Vital Remains: they sound checked and then took forever trying to figure something out... I thought it was for the sample, but I really know what it was. It was the leather suits they put on. after a reaaaaaally long wait, vr came out and killed it. Anthony's vocals are almost too much for they system to handle. And he also runs around the entire time, moshing through the crowd, running back around and getting back on stage. All while constantly summoning the unholy demons of hell through his vocals cords and not missing a breath. I also saw anthony and keith mutiney clasp hands over the crowd. Dave's got a new guitar. Flame out line shape to it and shinier than a new car. and tony.. At the beginning of their last spate of tour, I think tony was a little out of shape and seemed like he was contantly trying to just keep up with the guitar work. Now, tony's gone through a ton of tours, sweating to the classics in his leather armour, doing the new CD, and is in tip top, peak playing abilities. he could probable run a marathon in his armor and still shred on his evil axe. what a great way to end a show. |

_____________________________________ [May 29,2006 9:58pm - KeithMutiny ""] no no, the caption is... "hey hey, check this shit out, over at the pathos table, wicked brooooootal, ill make you a deal..." |
_______________________________________ [May 29,2006 10:11pm - the_reverend ""] dwyer did amazingly well this year. I got people to buy a few things from him. the singer from sadis euphoria to buy both a mucopus and clitorture/goreality CD. dwyer kept selling the split saying it's better than the CT full length. I'm still undecided on that one if you are going for the "best" CT songs. I was loosing my voice so it was hard to tell people about things. I think dwyer should get an iPOD and a set of HUGE head phones. let people listen to some tracks, but keep the iPod locked down or something. I know I could have gotten a lot more CDs out if I could tell people "oh, listen to this..." |
______________________________________ [May 29,2006 10:16pm - KeithMutiny ""] yea, it looked like he did quite well this weekend |

__________________________________ [May 30,2006 1:03pm - succubus ""] hahaha he posted a few minutes before you though |
______________________________________ [May 30,2006 1:05pm - the_reverend ""] yeah, but he posted like once or twice. reason: nude money slipnslide. |

______________________________________________ [May 30,2006 2:47pm - chris_from_shit_fuck ""] Day one was a blast, sucks I missed Heamorrhage but I had to stay at the booth so Alex could enjoy them. Other than that Butcher ABC and Municipal Waste were the main bands I went for this day, and they were fucking amazing. So much circle pitting during MW. |

HAEMMORHAGE was easily one of the best bands I've ever seen, they need to come back and do a full US tour ASA fucking P. Bloody monkey, indeed! Also, Don of the Dead singing "Corpsegrinder" with MACHETAZO was definitely not something to be missed, even if I did get shot in the eye with fruit punch repeatedly. |
