____________________________________ [Sep 5,2013 10:46am - Alx_Casket ""] Can I get the flu from getting the vaccine? No, the vaccine contains a killed virus and cannot give you the flu. Some people may experience slight pain or redness at the injection site or a slight achy feeling for a day or two. Many find taking over-the-counter pain relievers alleviate the symptoms. I never get the flu so I don’t need to be vaccinated, right? Even if you don’t get flu symptoms or have mild ones, you can still pass the virus to patients, co-workers, family members and others. Flu can be a very serious, even fatal, illness, especially for those who are immune-compromised, have chronic medical conditions, or are greater than 60 years or less than 5 years of age. Who should NOT receive the influenza vaccine? Influenza vaccine should be administered annually to everyone except the following: a. Less than 6 months of age b. A life-threatening reaction following a previous dose of influenza vaccine c. A history of Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a dose of influenza vaccine d. If you are sick and do not feel well, wait until symptoms resolve I have an egg allergy. Can I receive the influenza vaccine? Yes. Egg allergy is not a reason to refuse the influenza vaccine. For those with a history of egg allergy (such as being unable to eat scrambled eggs), the CDC recommends a specific vaccine that does not contain egg protein (FluBlok). I’m afraid of needles. Are there other options? Yes, there is an intra-dermal version of the vaccine available to help get as many people vaccinated as possible. This vaccine is licensed for people 18 through 64 years. |
