Our first demo can be named "True" (opposite of the DM masterpiece 'False')

quintessence said:i like it all. Dance of December souls was good, but not that great. Brave Murder Day is my favorite. Discourage Ones a close second. I dunno...i've always been able to pick up the same feelings and style in the "rock" albums as the "metal" albums. Anders Nystrom is one of my favorite guitar players simply because of his style. October Tide rules, but Rain without end is waaaay better than whatever the other one is called.. (I never listen to it)
i agree with everything you said, except tonight's decision is my favorite and i love grey dawn just as much as rain without end.

Their drummer is incredible too. Between the drums and the guitar tone you can spot a Katatonia song a mile away

the drumming is one of the main reasons i like the newer stuff more. the drumming from LFDGD on is so much more interesting. tonight's decision and discouraged ones are my favorite katatonia albums, but the drumming is the weakest part. it works in the context of the songs, but isn't very interesting itself.

Futile is an awesome record... you should also check out the slightly obscure Fallout, by Slumber (2004). A bit faster paced but some seriously excellent riffing imo.

i love fallout. slumber finally has a new one coming out. can't wait for that.

MikeofDecrepitude said:See, I don't hear the same band at all. Newer Katatonia is formulaic, and overuses the pop/rock structures for their songs. I have no problem with clean vocals, as I obviously enjoy bands like Opeth and Novembre. Both aforementioned bands have incredible vocalists, and unfortunately Jonas simply can't compete with them. The omission of interesting melodies, miserable riffs, and harsh vocals, has caused them to lose their original aesthetic appeal.

Fresh mozzarella and tomato on french bread, thanks.

katatonia strays further from their early stuff with each new release, but how can you not hear some of the early stuff (especially BMD) in discouraged ones and tonight's decision? There's a similar mood and similar jagged riffs.

i think their melodies have gotten more interesting and i find the clean vocals to be much more interesting than the harshes. as far as miserable riffs go, i consider discouraged ones to be their most miserable sounding album, and tonight's decision is pretty miserable also.

i personally enjoy the vocals of jonas much more than those of novembre's singer and i find them on par with akerfeldt's vocals. jonas has an understated and honest quality to his voice that isn't found often in metal. plus i'm a big fan of his lyrics.

we might not agree on all things katatonia, but at least we can agree on one thing:
mozzarella and tomato on french bread is a hell of a sandwich.

Awesome. Either that or "Sew the Dead" (opposite of the DM demo masterpiece "Skin the Living")

We can also wear Fishbone and 24-7 Spyz shirts to show how well versed we are.

Haha, yeah, our opinions on Katatonia are definitely diametrically opposed. This would make for a good discussion over wonderful fresh mozzarella and tomato sandwiches (with a pesto spread).

Before we break up, for kvlt status, our legacy must end with "The Butter You Spread" (alternate version of The Dreams You Dread)

This is from their myspace. You can hear some samples from the new album there.

News -June 09

The recording of Resonance has been re-set to October 5th - November 15th.
It will be recorded at the isolated sphere of "Panic Room Studios" in Skara as the last album. This time though, we have twice the time and much more knowledge. The album will shine !!

New line-up for the album recording and live performance;

Ehsan Kalantarpour - Vocals / Synth
Jari Lindholm - Guitar
Siavosh Bigonah - Bass / Growl
Markus Hill - Guitar
Ted Larsson - Drums
Mikael Brunqvist - Live 3rd guitarrist and percussionist

Female performances by Ida Sundquvist, Lina Svärd and Vinköl choir.

This is the moment some of us has been preparing our whole life for. The era of majestic melancholy in music that in time, hopefully can grow into a real live performing large orchestra of... dooom haha. We'll give this album our everything !

I hope you're enjoying the preview of Resonance. We'll put up more songs as we go along.

Take care

/Ehsan and Slumber

Also, FWIW, checkout Forgotten Tomb (Italy). I saw them headline the Rapture gig in 2007, grabbed one of their discs and I thought it was pretty good. Although it was pretty ironic listening to Tomi Ullgren bitch about them backstage while we were getting hammered, because they sounded like "fuckin katatonia shit" :shocker:
