Varg's out (of jail), BEHERIT and PROFANATICA have new albums out, the old school's coming back and metalcore's dying.

It's a good time to be a motherfucking Hessian.

From the website:

"In 1991, Norwegian churches started to burn, just after an underground circle of metal musicians had formed. While reporters and police scrambled for answers, more and more churches went up in flames. They had no leads until Varg Vikernes, one of the architects of an underground music-art-political scene known as BLACK MEAL took credit and was quickly arrested. While he was in police custody, the media ran a largely fabricated story of satanic rituals, abductions and sacrifices. This film reveals the true story behind the music, murders and church burnings, and shows what happened when these young men, who tried to change the world using music, art and violence, found that they could not control what they had created."

There's some bad news for black metal -- the new "Lords of Chaos" movie is going to use hip-hop instead of black metal. Poke around the website and you'll see.

K, first up, we love Chicago. Great town, GREAT crowd, thank you all for coming and for being such a great audience! HUGE thanks to those who helped us get the word out there. Despite being loopy from a cold, it was a very fun Q & A and we really enjoyed it. (P.S. we don't always.) I know there were many people who didn't get in: we're going to try to bring it back for you.

Just like San Francisco: We managed that one, the film starts a weeklong run July 31 at the Roxie Theater in SF. I really hope all you who didn't get to see it at YBCA will be able to catch one of these screenings. And having said that: this WOULD NOT have been possible had so many of you not supported the film at Yerba Buena. A million thanks. And then some. Please help us get the word out if you can - it's really tough with so little notice. Thank you!

More screenings coming: In addition to the list below, we are working on lots more. We have A TON going on here, working like mad to get as much done as we can. We've started working with Variance Releasing, they are not only awesome people, they can and will bring the film to a lot more places than we could on our own.

We REALLY need promo help in Tucson, Albuquerque, Chapel Hill, and Philadephia. Can anyone help flyer there?

A final note: this myspace page is fairly nonfunctional. We can't send messages (well, we can, but they go straight to you spam box) so please write us at untilfilm@gmail.com for anything. That's also the mailing list address, someday I will figure out how to make a real mailing list that I don't have to manually manage. For now, no time to work that out!

Opening in Houston:

Until the Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties with a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings.

The documentary goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

he result is a poignant, moving story that's as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what's actually true, as it is a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

hahahaa...aril this isn't a typical documentary. i'd say it's more of an art film than anything, without any other label that would be attached to something like that. i think if there was one definition of "black metal" in history, then this film is that definition...i really think everybody should see it. it was MUCH different than i could have possibly expected.

i just read the interview and i have a huge respect for these filmmakers. the quality of this work is rare these days and that helps to capture the essence of what this film was about which is more than just "black metal"...

True. Always loled at that.

It's also the handbook to becoming a black metal hipster.

Lords of Chaos gives an overview of the situation, but it's horribly biased and the journalism is laughable at best. It was a great gateway to the under story of this genre, but you have to do your own research, as i said it's horribly biased. and if you didn't know about the bands before the book, then piss off.
