Guitar Geeks: I'm getting a new Head...[views:22973][posts:80]____________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 7:38pm - RustedAngel ""] [img] ain't it pretty? not 100% definete, but I'm going to try it out in boston, and if I likes I pay for and take home. $1300 ($1900 new) with the footswitch ($200 new) mint condition, the guy needs to sell it to buy a tattoo kit. If I like it enough I might consider selling my DSL100, but for now I'll keep it. |
_______________________________ [Oct 5,2004 7:59pm - Hooker ""] I've been curious about engls for a while. Never played one. |
____________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 8:04pm - RustedAngel ""] yeah, I was too until I found this guy derek who posts on HC's website. check it: http://www.rocksolidamps.com/ I was sick of hearing soundclips of amps of people playing gay shit, it did no help. Derek's got metal riffs, and some clips even have roddy doing the drum tracks. Excellent site for a metal guitarist looking for gear. |
____________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 8:05pm - RustedAngel ""] I was looking at the framus cobra as well which are still sick heads, but he checked out my band and said I should def go with a powerball... I guess even Erik/Hate Eternal (who's been a die hard marshall fan for 14 years) is using a powerball on the new record. |
_________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 8:13pm - powerkok ""] wow...ok so explain some real geeky shit, like how many tubes etc how many. why is it better than a marshall or mesa, what makes it great? I know it looks really nice in that pic! I like that mesh. P.s. I will never use another guitar head again. Im a poweramp guy, so Im not biased at all. |
_______________________________ [Oct 5,2004 8:25pm - Hooker ""] what pre/power setup do you have? |
____________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 8:51pm - RustedAngel ""] kok, the problem with marshall is they aren't really too metal sounding coming out of the box. Most marshall's you hear that sound really good are modified probably in some way. I got my Output Transformer replaced with an OEI from voodooamps and it sounds better than it did stock. with mesa, a lot of people accuse mesa of being amps for nu-metal kids. I personally just don't really dig how they sound. Not many amps are made for metal... But amps like ENGL, FRAMUS are... check out a few clips of the engl powerball: http://www.rocksolidamps.com/MP3/Powerball%20Derek%20Roddy%20Seth.mp3 -- random riffs with a derek roddy drum track http://www.rocksolidamps.com/MP3/Walk%20No%20Solo%202.mp3 -- pantera / walk. http://www.rocksolidamps.com/MP3/Engl%20Powerball%20Covers.mp3 -- some random riffing. here's the framus cobra doing praise the lord - dying fetus: http://www.rocksolidamps.com/MP3/Dying%20F...us%20PTL%20Framus%20Cobra%20MP3.mp3 powerball specs: Front Panel Features 4 channels: Clean, Crunch, Lo Gain Lead and Hi Gain Lead; 2 Gain knobs each for CH I (Clean & Crunch) and CH II (Lo Gain and Hi Gain Lead) 4 Volume knobs: Clean, Crunch, Lo Lead, Hi Lead; Bright and Bottom sound-shaping buttons for CH I; Separate Bottom sound-shaping button for CH II Lo Lead and Hi Lead; 4-way voicing section, Bass, Middle, Treble Clean, Treble Crunch for CH I; 4-way voicing section, Bass, Mid Open, Mid Focused, Treble for Ch II; CHI/II channel switch, Gain Lo/Hi, Sound style selector Open/Focused (affects all channels), Master A/B, switchable on the device or via two ENGL Z-4s or an ENGL Z-5 Custom Footswitch, A and B power amp Master knobs; Power amp Presence and Depth Punch knobs; Electronic monitoring system for the power amp tubes; Standby switch. Rear Panel Features 2 stereo ¼” jacks for the Z-4 two-way footswitch; D-Sub 9 port for connecting the ENGL Z-5 Custom Footswitch; Noise Gate Threshold for activating the lead channels' Noise Gate and setting the desired threshold for the Noise Gate; F.X. Loop Send / Return with Balance knob; Power amp outputs: 2 x 4 ohms, 2 x 8 ohms and 1 x 16 ohms; 100 watts, 4 6L6GC power amp tubes. Technical details The ENGL Powerball is a state-of-the-art guitar head featuring four channels in all-tube design: Clean, Crunch and two lead channels with different gain tunings - Lo Lead for swift response and Hi Lead with enhanced gain levels, massive low end and a mighty punch. A Bottom button boosts low end response for each lead channel, intensifying what is already considerable bottom end punch. If the occasion calls for mega depth punch, this is the button to push. The two primary channels each sport a specially tuned three-way voicing section: Main Channel I (Clean & Crunch) with separate Treble knobs for Clean and Crunch Main Channel II (Lo Lead & Hi Lead) with two Mid knobs, Open and Focused. This means that the midranges of the two sound styles are separately adjustable and accessible via footswitch. In addition, the Open and Focused sound styles affect the Clean and Crunch channel so that they can be tuned precisely to taste. Each channel is equipped with a Volume knob. This makes it possible to dial in precisely the desired balance of levels for the different channels. Beyond that, there are two Master (A & B) knobs for presetting different overall levels. Power amp outputs: 2 x 4 ohms, 2 x 8 ohms and 16 ohms for various speaker combinations. Footswitch functions: Ch I/II, Gain Lo/Hi, Open/Focused sound style selection, Master A/B; Clean - Crunch and Lead Lo - Hi are switched via Gain Lo/Hi. ENGL Z-5 Custom Footswitch port: This footboard is the command center for controlling all switching options remotely. Power amp Presence and Depth Punch knobs. 4 x 6L6GC-powered 100-watt power amp with electronic circuit breaker. Adjustable FX Loop (0 to 100% from parallel to serial); Noise Gate in the two Lead channels with adjustable Threshold. Rock Solid Amps Price: $1839.00 Suggested MSRP: $2299.00 |

The only amps that will touch ENGL are names like Hughes&Kettener, Bogner, Soldano, Dezel, VHT ect. Don't waste your time on medocer amps, you will only be unhappy. " |
_________________________________ [Oct 6,2004 9:51am - litacore ""] the amp is indeed pretty and I bet it whales but the knobs look kinda fragile I agree powerkok, nothing beats a tube amp. I graduated from a solid state Marshall Mosfet 100 to a JCM 900 this past summer and I'm such a convert. |
____________________________________ [Oct 6,2004 9:54am - RustedAngel ""] lol, what the hell would you do to knobs that would break them anyways? they are meant for you to turn and doesn't require a lot of effort. I've seen people with knobs torn off their amps before. If you have that much of an issue maybe you should think about putting your head in an ATA case. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 6,2004 10:12am - GoatCatalyst ""] To all owners of Engl amplifiers: I HATE YOU. I myself have a rather sensual Mesa Simul 295 from about '86 or so, so it has both the EL34's and 6L6's. Nonetheless, I hate you. |
__________________________________ [Oct 6,2004 10:15am - litacore ""] well transporting the things in with other equipment sometimes causes damage, but ya know, my issue is more with sound. Broken knobs are badass looking anyway. you should see Neptune's amps. |

______________________________ [Oct 6,2004 10:29am - blue ""] good choice tom. i definetly agree with marshalls, they sound best for high gain when modified. one day ill purchased a hot rodded jcm 800. the framus cobra rock its hard, along with the genz benz. another one you should also consider is the ashdown fallen angel head. those rock heavily as well. |

Such a Brutal Amp especially for nickelback riffs. Actually I've heard from ENGL owners and sellers that the Savage 120, and even the $3500 special edition doesn't even the amount of gain of the powerball. __________________________________ [Oct 7,2004 8:30pm - ArrowHead ""] I WOULD reccomend you get a different cab for the ENGL. ENGL cabs are pretty hard to get right now, but a mesa cab or a madison might do the trick. Something a bit oversized, to account for all that extra air you're pushing. The powerballs are the shit, you're one lucky mother for having one. I first heard one on this kid's recordings - http://www.btinternet.com/~mikawbarish/1960/TesseracT-Part1b-DFH2.mp3 , amazing sound. Even the clean tone is perfect. there's a lot more samples of his recordings with the powerball at his website, - http://www.tesseract-project.tk/ . Talented kid, writes and records everything, even programs all the drums. (yeah, those drums are programmed. fooled me at first too!) |
____________________________________ [Oct 7,2004 8:50pm - RustedAngel ""] yeah man, first step was to get the head, next I'll be trying to hunt down a cab for it... I have many cabs in mind: framus engl (rocksolidamps should getting a batch in soon) vht vader bogner definetly haven't made any final decisions yet. BTW, tesseract is awesome, I had a feeling they were using Drumkit From Hell and I was right... booya! I should really setup a mini studio on my computer so I can record guitar. |
____________________________________ [Oct 7,2004 8:55pm - RustedAngel ""] first notes on playing with the powerball: well, the sound is sick... It seems that the built in noisegate is a bit weak which I knew before hand but that's not a huge concern because there are solutions for that...With my SUPER C going through the loop, it blocks the noise completely, but I'm still getting feedback at stage volume at stops. As a test I unplugged the loop, got out my Boss NS-2 and plugged that right into the front and it solved the problem. I'm not really sure what to think other than I guess I have to use my NS-2 for now, until I figure out how to back off the feedback. I'm not sure if it's the powerball that's causing the feedback or if it's my EMG's? |
