JACK CAFFERTY, CNN ANCHOR: Thank you, Wolf.

Listen to this quote: "I think energy independence is going too far." You know who said that? The president of one of the big oil companies, of course. John Hofmeister, who runs Shell, a division of Royal Dutch Shell, said in a TV interview that energy independence is the wrong goal for the U.S. He thinks it's good for international relations and for the economy to get our oil from all over the world.

His company sells a lot of oil to this country of ours. He's promoting something that he calls energy security through energy diversity, which means combining the use of conventional oil and gas, along with alternative energy sources.

Meanwhile, government stats show 57 percent of the oil used in this country is imported. Last week, the average price of a gallon of gasoline, $2.93, up 40 percent from a year ago. Polls show most Americans blame Shell and the other oil companies for the spike in gas prices. But Hofmeister refuses to apologize for the industry's record profits.

Here's the question: The president of Shell Oil company says that energy independence is going too far. Do you agree?

Shell sez that Energy independence is bad for America. Why do they hate us so?

We import 57% of our oil... FROM CANADA AND CENTRAL AMERICA. We get little to no oil from the middle east, do you know why? It cost too much to ship. Oil companies are smarter than you think, why pay twice as much for oil to be shipped half-way across the world when you can get it cheaper in your backyard?

I'll sit back and wait for Shadow to bail you out...

You do know that Iraq sits in the middle of nearly two-thirds of the world's proven oil reserves, and that we're running out of oil? In fact China will be using more oil than we are in 10 years, then it'll run out even faster. Oh yeah, alot of the countries in Central America have smartened up and decided to stop listening to bullshit from the U.S. and Europe, those countries have figured out that the profits from their oil should go back to their people, so we'll see how long we get oil from them.

You need to stop smoking, you've become delusional. True, the middle east sits on a lot of oil (its closer to 57% rather than 2/3). The country that sits on the most (Saudi Arabia) is in good standing with us. We are in good standing with more than half the countries over there. If we wanted the oil, we'd have it.

Also, we are not running out of oil, as in the planet will have no more oil. Some (not all) of our drilling spots are running out. There is plenty more, but hippie retards won't let us use it.

And how do the oil profits in central/south america go back into the people?

and then there's this take on the matter

Knowing that I would not be disappointed, I listened to the opening segments of Rush Limbaugh's show a little while ago. I was certain he would be in high dudgeon about this horrifying, awful story:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - An Iraqi military official said Tuesday that the bodies of two missing U.S. soldiers showed signs of torture, and that the men appeared to have been killed "in a barbaric way." Meanwhile, the umbrella group for Iraq insurgents said the man who succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed the two soldiers.

"We give the good news ... to the Islamic nation that we have carried God's verdict by slaughtering the two captured crusaders,'" said a statement in the name of the Mujahedeen Shura Council, the umbrella group for five insurgent organizations, including al-Qaida in Iraq.

The statement, which could not be authenticated, said the two soldiers were "slaughtered,"' suggesting they had been beheaded. The Arabic word used in the statement, "nahr," is used for the slaughtering of sheep by cutting the throat and has been used in past statements to refer to beheadings.

The claim of responsibility was posted on an Islamic militant Web site where insurgent groups regularly post statements.
As I knew would be the case, Limbaugh's outrage and indignation were not directed at the insurgents who tortured and killed the American soldiers. Oh, no. His hatred and contempt were directed at the "crazed liberals, hate-America" crowd, and at the "drive-by liberal media."

Just a couple of minutes into the program, Limbaugh read an email from a listener, who wondered if "the left will say the soldiers deserved it," and who went on to say he was "so sick of the cut-and-run liberals." After reading the email, Limbaugh said he had gone to the "wacko lefty" sites to see what they were saying. Sure enough! "They're happy these two soldiers got tortured! Good riddance to them!" Limbaugh said the crazed left would use these deaths to say once again that this "war" was going nowhere, that we're losing, etc. (All paraphrases, but close to fully accurate; I was taking notes, since I knew what would be coming.)

Well, sez I to myself, this is pretty easy to check out. So I donned my internets exploring outfit and did some field work. (When I go exploring this way, I usually get an extra large cup of coffee, put on my LA Dodgers cap, and sometimes I even put my pants on. Yes, that's right: I often write half-nekkid! No pajamas for this boy.)

I started at Daily Kos. At the time I checked, I didn't even find a mention of this story. So I went to Atrios. Also no mention. He has some weird Joe Klein thing going on now. Not crazed enough, Atrios! Remedial classes in Advanced Lefty Lunacy and Evil lie in your future! Then I went to Booman Tribune. Ditto. And I mean, c'mon. Stories about free laser eye surgery for Navy pilots? How disappointingly banal and normal.

Okay, sez I, that's enough. I'm bored. Not enough craziness. Now there may be a couple of sites out there where a couple of posters said ugly and regrettable things. But obviously that's not what Limbaugh is contending -- and that's not what this is about. You don't need an advanced degree in psychology to see the extreme degree of projection involved here (among many other elements). Limbaugh and his fellow thugs -- i.e., the zealots who defend All Things Bush -- have politicized every aspect of the "War on Terror" since the day after 9/11. They took up Bush's line that "you're either with us or against us," and applied it not only to the rest of the world -- but to all Americans.

But what they meant was that if you didn't support every element of Bush's foreign policy -- even when that policy involved blatant acts of aggression against countries that were no threat to us and hadn't attacked us -- then, in InstaProf's infamous phrase, you were "on the other side." You were with the terrorists. From their vantage point, there wasn't any significant conceptual difference.

And they project their own methodology of politicization onto those they perceive to be their "enemies" here at home. Since they use every event to advance their political agenda, they assume everyone else does, too.

Of course, as my non-scientific survey demonstrates and as we all know in countless other ways, everyone else doesn't. Some of us simply believe that the invasion and occupation of Iraq were and are an immoral act of large-scale destructiveness, and of self-destructiveness. (And, yeah, Rush: we're losing. We lost when the first American soldier set foot in Iraq.) Innumerable facts support that judgment, just as they supported it before the invasion even began. But if the Limbaughs were to acknowledge that, their dishonest and ugly game wouldn't work. So they have to invent a mythical "crazed left" and a mythical "enemy," and endow it with the required attributes. If the lunatic liberals and all the other people who oppose our foreign policy don't actually say what Limbaugh needs them to say...well, they said it anyway. Besides, Limbaugh knows that's what they're really thinking.

I suppose one might criticize the sites I mentioned for not discussing the story at all -- but since every day brings terrible news, what are people supposed to say? "Here's still another terrible story. Yes, it's really terrible." When the nightmare never ends, it becomes increasingly difficult to note how nightmarish it is in ways you haven't already discussed endless times.

Limbaugh made one other comment that I found somewhat interesting. He said that for the "crazed lefties" to be "happy" that the American soldiers were tortured and to subscribe to the rest of the program he's invented for them, the "hate-America" crowd has to believe that what we did in Abu Ghraib or our use of torture (which Limbaugh, of course, denies is torture) is "the same as what the terrorists do."

When advocates of our foreign policy like Charles Krauthammer offer detailed "defenses" of the legitimized use of torture (and when people like Andrew Sullivan offer singularly unconvincing "refutations") -- when Krauthammer explicitly argues that our enemies have forced us to adopt their methods and that, if we wish to defeat them, we must embrace evil ourselves -- I am hard-pressed to identify precisely what the difference is, insofar as Limbaugh's specific point is concerned. And the same is true of many other horrors we have committed over the last several years -- recently culminating, as but a single example, in the suicides at Guantanamo. (My entire series on torture is described here.)

But all that is just a little too much reality for the Limbaugh crowd.

Well, that's enough exploring on the internets for one morning. I'm tired. More coffee, please.

Yes, they are fighting for Iraq's oil fields. This is because Iraq's main export is oil, and without it, the Iraqis' economy (and, therefore, lives) is ruined. It's nice to see that you're against making Iraqis' lives better through the protection of their #1 export, asshole.

Actually, there's shitloads of oil right here. Nevada and ANWR. But regulations keep us from getting any of it. I can't believe we used to actually be an exporter of this stuff.

Also, the supply of oil has actually increased. The problem with prices today is that the supply isn't keeping up with the demand, not that there's less oil.

And those things will come in due time. There is nothing out there that cam match or beat what oil can do now. We have a lot of starting points, but they still need to be improved to meet our demands. If you don't believe me, look at history...

We first used wood for all energy. Then we found coal. After coal came oil. Oil has been around for about 160 years... Its near the end of its run. Soon (I say about 10-20 years) oil will be pushed out of the mainstream and loosing popularity fast. Right now, its all we got.

We may be more advanced, but the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these alternative fuels can only come with years of research. But how are we going to replace half of our oil imports with corn and grease? The grease, maybe. But do you think that 10.35 million barrels of CORN fuel could be produced daily?

Ha. I'm glad they planted them, but for most of those logs to get to any usable size, it's going to take 200-500 years. Consumption exceeds growth.

I will use Koa, Mahogany, fiddleback maple, and certain species of rosewood as my example.

Do you know how much fucking money it costs to buy a 12x48x2 piece of koa or fiddleback to build a guitar?

Koa is almost banned

I don't care what the issue is or what your politics are, you know a policy is destructive when even people who stand to gain from it in the short term start to worry about the long term implications. If an environmentalist says our laws are too stringent and hurting business, you know it's for real. If a reverend says we have too much religion in our public institutions, you know it's for real. It's interesting that none of the people here backing Bush policies have even tried offering an alternate explanation for the Shell President's criticism; instead they just rattle off the same talking points.

So, it's fine to be in good standing with a country that lets terrorists come over and bomb us as long as they keep selling us oil (Saudi Arabia), but countries that don't even threaten us (Iraq) are enemies...I see, it all makes perfect sense now.

I donno why you're proving my point about U.S. foreign policy and the world bank, but ok.

Like Pat said, they don't let terrorists come over here. Also, for the umteenth time THE MIDDLE EAST DOES NOT SELL OIL TO THE U.S.A. Why do you have so much trouble with that concept? Saudi Arabia is part of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which was set up to take the power of the world oil supply away from British and American oil companies. Saudi Arabia and the other middle eastern countries sell to Europe, Asia, and Africa. They don't ship the oil across the world to us. There are a few OPEC countries that do sell oil to us, and they are located in South/Central America.

Like I've said before, invading Iraq was nipping a problem in the butt before it became a big problem. Was this Bush's view? I don't care, its mine. Should we do it to other countries in a similar spot (like Korea)? Yup.

Also, I am now confused about your view on the world bank. It seemed like you were in favor of it. Now you say you are not. Care to clarify?

wow, I guess I need to explain more. The U.S. government (and many in Europe) use the world bank to force poor countries to accept terms that benefit U.S. foreign policy and corporations. They countries are forced to privatize their oil, water, and other natural resouces in exchange for a loan, but they never get ahead. The corporations move in and hike the rates to 3 times what people were originally paying for say, water. They go into massive debt, children starve, and the country usually erupts into civil war. fun. So yeah, the world bank can go fuck itself.

I don't like the world bank either. Never said I did. I originally was looking for why you think oil profits in South America go back to the people, and you tell me to look up the world bank. Do you want to try again?
 _____________________________________
[Jun 27,2006 3:08pm - HailTheLeaf ""]
I don't need to try again, you need to put 2 and 2 together. A few countries in South America are telling the world bank to fuck off and keeping the rights to their own resources, (oil, water, etc.) so the profits go back to their people instead of a foreign corporate entity. That's why the U.S. has their panties in a knot over Venezuela right now.
That's about as simple as I can put it.

I read that article today on CNN. He is an idiot for saying that. But the government has always had access to anyone's bank records that may be a criminal. They are not spying on your statement (unless you are a suspect in some sort of terrorists act or crime that would have to do with money). There are just too many bank accounts in the counrty. Also, the government does not have direct access to the records. They have to get in contact with the bank or the software provider for the bank in order to get them. And they don't get them without the right paper work (I used to work for a bank, and I've had to get these reports before).

Heck, every bank sends a report to the IRS every year so they can catch people working under the table, or getting money illegally. Bush is a dumb fuck for thinking people didn't know about this.

Scarborough - You gotta admit-it’s frightening. More so to us who know how Washington works and know how power can corrupt and know how power can be abused. I believe friends, we are in dangerous times for those of us who believe like Thomas Jefferson-that Washington is not to be trusted with unlimited police power

As are all the countless people on his bandwagon who have been going on TV saying that The NY Times committed treason (a death penalty offense).

If you wonder why people truly loathe Bush, this is why; it's not for any one decision, but the general climate his presidency has created. We have reactionary conservatives taking up 50% or more of the news media airtime, daily reinforcing with arrogant smugness viewpoints that would have been considered fascist and un-American until a few years ago.

But its not really taking away any privacy. Its similar to setting up cameras on public streets. It doesn't matter during a normal day. Those cameras are not constantly monitored. There just isn't enough people to do that. They are put up in public places, where a person only has as much privacy as there are people around. These things don't matter. They are too small to loose sleep over. If they were setting up cameras inside buildings (non-public ones owned by regular people), or on someone's land then it would be a violation of privacy. If they make your bank statements public information, that would be a violation of privacy.

I was actually going to post something HILARIOUS I saw on MSNBC yesterday about this very topic. Two talk radio hosts were interviewed via satellite and asked about the bank records controversy. One calmly and politely asked a simple question: "Who should decide what gets published in the NY Times? The NY Times or the government?" The other guy, an archconservative, who true to form had at first appeared with the smuggest, shit-eating grin on his face, got PISSED. He started insulting the guy, calling him fat, a joke, an idiot, and even called him Goebbels (Hitler's chief propogandist). He started yelling that this was a waste of this time talking to this idiot, and shame on all of them for making him to it, interrupting MSNBC Journalist Chris Jansing's question to the other guy until she had to tell him to be quiet. Finally, he flipped out, tore out his earpiece, and stormed off in the middle of the segment. It was the most hilarious and embarassing thing I have seen a neo-conservative (or anyone for that matter) do in a long time. I wish I had it on tape.
