good, i'm glad he was forced into showing it. as leader of a country, a country with an explicit presidential stipulation of "born in the country", it should have never taken this long to show. will this shut "birthers" up? no, of course not, but at least a document was provided. i think it's ridiculous when people think that just because some government official supposedly saw it when he was elected that it's definitive proof. because our government is so notorious for being open and transparent about everything.

i'm not saying the "birthers" were right, but i do think they had a valid claim. show your fucking birth certificate, it's not that difficult.

He already showed proper documentation with the other forms of his birth certificate. My birth certificate that I showed when getting my passport was also the shorter form. Also: check out the fucking crazy proposed changes to the passport application.

He showed the same short-form certificate to become President that you showed to get your passport. It's like if they said to you when you tried to get a passport no that's not good enough, get us the long form - which would never happen, as fortunately this level of stupidity only attaches itself to political leaders, because I know I'd sure be pissed if I had to get a longer birth certificate just because my birth name isn't Johnson or Smith.

It's not even 2. Only the mother has the be a citizen. So even if Obama WAS born in Kenya, he'd still be able to be president. "Natural born citizen" does not mean "born on US soil."

Nonetheless, I still think Pam's take on the overall topic is the right one.

Nobody asked any previous Presidents for this, no one cared that McCain wasn't actually born in the US, and none of the people on the radio/TV raising hell about it now would be worried about birth certificates had McCain won, or had a different Democrat like Edwards or Hillary won.

LOL WUT???

If Obama was born in Kenya, his mother's citizenship wouldn't make a difference. Likewise, if he was born in Hawaii to 2 non-citizens, he would be a natural born USAn. It's about location, nothing to do with parents' citizenship status.

"The children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens."

It's in the Immigration and Naturalization act.

dertoxia said:"The children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens."

It's in the Immigration and Naturalization act.

If I remember correctly though, this really only applies with both parents being citizens and residents, i.e. only temporarily overseas. According to the ever-reliable Wikip., the "natural born" part hasn't been interpreted by the courts, but I can't imagine it would hold with a baby born into foreign residency.

Also:

Here again is the citation at issue from the Naturalization Act of 1790:

"... And the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens:"

Here is the portion of the Naturalization Act of 1795 that repealed the Naturalization Act of 1790:

… and the children of citizens of the United States born out of the limits and jurisdiction of the United States, shall be considered as citizens of the United States.

From this site: http://www.etherzone.com/2008/nath022208.shtml

And some right-wingers have also been offering the debatable opinion that even being born in Hawaii, Obama would have needed 2 citizen parents to count as "natural born".

So there's really no definitive law or ruling, but unless the kid is squeezed out at a foreign military/diplomatic site or while the parents are on an overseas vacation, being born to USAn parents out of the country allows for citizenship, but most likely not the elusive natural-born citizenship.

[Apr 28,2011 7:25pm - Headbanging_Man ""]
I'm not saying I necessarily believe in/support it, but until the "natural born" part is removed from the Constitution by amendment or clarified, I think anyone born into foreign residence of USAn parents will be able to claim basic citizenship, but won't meet most interpretations of native/natural born.

I actually think the best way to deal with the whole natural-born concept is to define it as those who receive US citizenship on birth, whether through territorial or parental means.

These 2 State Dept. documents didn't clear up a whole lot, but maybe someone else can offer some interpretation. At the very least, the 2nd one states that:

"It has never been determined definitively by a court whether a person who acquired U.S. citizenship by birth abroad to U.S. citizens is a natural-born citizen within the meaning of Article II of the Constitution and, therefore, eligible for the Presidency."
