Yeah but that "taste of cigarettes" asshole is the real fucking jerk off. Man i want to stab him sooooo many times. One time he helped me find people to join my band and then he went and helped me start a record label and I totall wanted to kill him because really, you should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS fuck over people that help you.

also I can not simultaneously be successful at the same time as him so I have to make sure I make fun of him or stand in his way, because secretely I am afraid he might outshine me when really I should just learn to feel proud of my own accomplishments. I shouldnb't need to knock others down to feel worthwhile, but I do!

It's cool, though, cause I am different than a bully or white trash for the following reasons _______________. None!

Time to burn as many bridges as I can.

dude, chill out. We can accomplish more through working together, or at least in ways that complete each other, rather than against each other and diminish both our actions.

Whatever it is, get over it.

"Nick Cigs Is A Total Fucking Loser Asshole And I Want To Kill Him" was my parody version of people who keep posting under unregistered names with wry comments.

So technically, yes, I do want to scrub myself down. I smell like foot today :\

There's not enough maturity in the world to make people learn to work out their problems in a productive way, so that's why people make fun of good bands, good people, or good actions, or take things people do for granted.

somebody probably does want to stab me, but their rational is just as good as that "faux post" I made: For some reason the idea of co-existing with someone else in a mutually productive way - or at least exclusive of harmful or malicious action - that you may or may not find grievance with escapes some people.

I dunnow why.

however, the numerous other anonymous posters that like to diss and piss have nothing to do with me. Perhaps a fan club?

I think, TOS, that you're a little confused.

Metal used to have basement shows all the time. I think when you got into metal aka last year you thought that Palladium shows were all there was to it. There's more to metal than just playing huge shows and showing up someone on guitar, and there's more to music than just trying to copy James Hetfield or Yngwie.

Plus all I'm doing is setting up shows I didn't see but felt were necsessary. I'll be frank, for the past year all I've seen is shows set up by Joe NotCommon and a few select other people. Even in hardcore, the only people really setting shit up is MassConcerts and for DIY stuff, Ben Sisto used to do more but mostly does bigger bands and some crossover stuff here and there. Jonah's too busy to do the work for everybody and shouldn't have to. He basically filled a slot that was left over when all the "punks" got lazy.

I'm speaking mostly for the Greater Boston area.

That said, Joe and all these other people don't have 1,000 hours a week to spend on booking and setting things up, and even if they do, they shouldn't HAVE to. We should all try and do our part to make what we want to see happen happen.

My booking policies are sort of anti-status quo. I book bands that I think don't get enough shows and are actually pretty good -- and sometimes I even book bands that I don't think are good but I think people overlook. I can't do this with EVERY show all AT ONCE but it's a gradual thing. When we started, S&SF was as hungry for shows as we were, so we decided when we had the chances to help them, or PFAP, or other bands, we would do that (TOS collectively).

I always like to give new bands a start because I think it's lame how they have to do the Catch22 of play a show to get acknowledged but can't get a show because no one acknoweldges them. I have given starts to a lot of good bands -- some without ever hearing them first. I've also helped a lot of labels and promoters sink their teeth into doing this kind of work.

Why? Because to me, I like the system as much as I like the output. I like music, but I like the stuff behind the music almost more. Shows are what make me happy, give me a chance to be creative; they help build community, help us make friendships, and give us a chance to be affected by art. It's one of the few things I'm good at.

That is universal to all performance and all music: it is why we create...We do it to satisfy something ethereal inside.

Read the "DIY Booking guide" I posted and you'll see some of my booking policies. I didn't come up with them over night. Since high school I've noticed shit doesn't get done unless you sink two hands and make it happen for yourself. So I've been doing that since...and that's that. Along the way some really great bands and shows have gone through my fingers, I've been lucky to work with, as well as some cool people, some other good promoters, and some cool labels.

That's what I do and why I do it. If you have any qualm with that, you're mistaken. If I didn't book you, I either heard you and didn't agree with your band (which is vague, considering how much I agree with music); If I DID book you I didn't fuck you over -- my track record with that is 100% clean. I've never once fucked a band and if a band ever had a problem, I usually deferred to them or offered to compensate them in whatever way they saw fit. There is nothing I dislike more than a promoter that purposely fucks over people.

Don't like what I do? Put on your own shows! Don't like the records I used to put out? Put out your own records! Don't like my band? Start your own band! And when you do, and people diss on your band, you'll think what I'm thinking now, which is, "Well, considering I wrote this song for myself and I like this song, it seems weird how adamant you are about not liking it. Makes me think you think it will change something...Like I only like what I wrote if you like it."

what about hall shows? you play those. Basement shows are like hall shows without the overhead financially so you can do more with them; without having such a large space that it is not used sufficiently (and hence is echo or feels vacant); and with a little bit more of a relaxed environment.

Now THAT is a reason to book BoE....If I can get another basement show together in November, do you guys want to play? If you don't like it, you can say they are gay as much as you want, and if you DO like it, well great that's cool. Deal?

Cause just cause i don't like something doesn't mean I'll never like something, and just cause I don't like something doesn't mean someone else won't like it.

for instance, I make a point to listen to something I don't like every now and then to see if there's anything I missed...kinda like an "idiot check" on the things that don't appeal to me. Today I realized I genuinely like one Emperor song. Remember how this morning I said I can't stand them? Still can't stand most of them but one song stood out as really good.

That's an example right there.

I just don't want the bands from the current boston 'scene' to get so overlooked in other areas of new england. All of them have made it clear on this board that they want to play other areas, but there was no Prophetless Productions or whatever in manchester or other cities for them to talk to and send stuff to. It has nothing to do with bands being lazy. Alot of bands are not in the position to return favors either, they just want to play and have fun doing it. If they travel far, I am sure they would appreciate gas money or more if it's there, but if not I am sure alot of them would still play to build themselves a fan base and sell merch to kids. I think they would prefer to play with bands they fit with, for instance that Reading show, I doubt anyone will like Ascendancy there. In my opinion there is more to shows then just booking bands, for me I book bands I like , but also that fit together and I decide an order that flows the best in my head. Sometimes I am wrong, but usually I do a good job I think. I don't think 5 death metal bands is a good idea necesarilly, it could get boring. Same with 4-5 of the same anything, grind, doom whatever. If the bands are interesting enough or varied but the show flows well then it's a success. Drawing people to a show is only one concern I have, if there are 4 bands who each draw their own crowd, but it's so out there that no bands crowd likes the other bands then the show is a failure in my opinion. This is just touching the ice berg, I put alot of thought into line ups and orders on shows. I know Anne knows what I am saying, as does Brian Morse. I have talked with both of them about it. I would like to see more promoters come around in other areas who see eye to eye with me, that would be ideal. Who knows if it will happen, the bomb shelter obviously doesnt give a shit and most promoters just throw shows together that make no sense to me. But obviously thats just my opinion and it might mean absolutely nothing to everyone else and there is nothing I can do about that.

[Sep 23,2004 11:57pm - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""]
well, I mean, I disagree with the Reading thing.

it actually was thought out.

See, the original lineup was this:

PsyOpus
The Sawtooth Grin
Ascendancy
The Taste Of Silver
Pray For A Plague

doesn't that make more sense?
but, the venue had to change, and the lineup had to change, and it's close to what it was before, but not the same thing. Those other 2 bands are very technical and would only help to bring out the proficiency with which Ascendancy does their thing, but unfortunately they both had to cancel tours. So Ascendancy is now the most technical band on the bill.

However, does that mean a show should go away? no, it's really hard to predict what will happen, and it could be an overwhelming success.

Audiences can be very predictable, but also unpredictable as well. Josh Kelly's Lickgoldensky show should have had 100 kids, but instead had about 13. It's hard to peg how this will work.

What I can say is this:

upstairs I have been listening to, as of late:
Eighteen Visions
Sense Fail
Gorilla Biscuits
Walls Of Jericho
The Year of Our Lord
Saves The Day

and honestly, I think Ascendancy is a fucking killer band.

so there's no accounting for who will like what. Punks should not have liked Aganihm, but they did and the last show had as many punks as hardcore or metal kids. Aganihm even said, specifically, that they don't want breakdowns and would try to avoid them at all costs, only using them if it was necessary. But, in the end, who could have guessed they'd have a hardcore audience?
 ________________________________________
[Sep 24,2004 12:02am - Joe/NotCommon ""]
I definately think punks would love Aganihm.

I don't think Ascendancy is a 'technical' band, just a really fast band. You have too much faith in people if you think you can't pigeonhole most of them. I have no idea who The sawtooth grin or pray for a plague are. It's possible it could work, but I don't think Psyopus, Ascendancy and the taste of silver fit together at all. Maybe psyopus and the taste of silver, depending on how the rest of the line up works. You don't have to cancel a show because some bands dropped off, but there are ways to continue making it flow right. If you think it is then don't listen to me, I am just stating my opinion and how I operate.

If people don't listen to you, they're nuts.

Doesn't mean you're always right, but I think you definitely know what you're talking about the majority of the time. And if you're wrong, you're close to the answer.

For a long time...I dunnow how long...all I saw was NotCommon flyers for shows. Like, barely any other flyers. You did so much of the legwork for the boston metal scene and very few people said thanks or gave a nod to that. To be honest, even if people HATE you or think you are a tool, they're pretty fucking off base if they don't consider your perpsective. They could learn at least a thing or two about diligence and perseverity.

I don't know, I've been booking shows since 2001, there are probably other ways to approach it depending on what you want out of it. My main thing was to seperate metal and hardcore because those shows were fucking gay and that was what was holding the metal scene back. I have become good at what I want to do, thats all I know. If there is anything to learn or whatever, thats open to discussion. I know some people hate me and some people love me, but nobody else acted so now I am in a position that I will probably not go away anytime soon. The bands I book have no reason to stop working with me, as far as I know of anyway. I like what's going on in Boston, and in Providence. Different bands, but same mentality. Hopefully the 2 scenes can mix and match with each other. I really want to see that happen with New Hampshire, and now everyone will accuse me of being an ego-maniac control freak booking nazi again, but I swear I am not out to rule the world. Until after the Apocalypse, Anne and I have a plan ready in case that happens too.
