here's what I posted on Myspace about this. a lot of people found it fairly accurate.... From: 867530AIDS Date: Jan 17, 2006 12:04 AM the long and short of it: Urban Outfitters, a crappy trendcenter company that exploits trendy nerds and turns a profit off of making people look like douchebags.... ripped off a t-shirt design from Johnny Cupcakes, a kid who slaps cupcakes on ripoff hackneyed popculture images and patterns and exploited "hardcore" to push his merch on trendy nerds (FOR $31.99 A T-SHIRT). wahh wahh boo hoo who cares 1) Anyone who knows me, and knows my usual criticisms should know why I've found a certain degree of satisfaction in watching this particular intellectual property get stolen. Really, something you part "hard work" into got stolen? Someone else ripped your ideas, and is turning a profit over it? Someone else is taking credit for your work simply because they can? Because they have the means, connections, capital, and opportunity to get away with it? Now you're left holding your dick while someone else cashes in on a carbon copy of something you created? Shitty. Does this sound familar to anyone? 2) And even if you don't know me that well (or you're just deaf or braindead) how about this: GET YOUR FUCKING PRIORITIES IN ORDER. When was the last time Johnny Cupcakes paid your gas bill? When was the last time some stupid t shirt with a cupcake stamped on it put food on your table, paid your rent, got you a job, signed your paycheck, or did anything worthwhile for you? Or perhaps the better question to ask is.... when was the last time Johnny Cupcakes took your money, pushed his merch on you, asked you for a favor, or looked at you as a stepping stone to making more money? Get the fuck off it already, and think about it. "Johnny Cupcakes" and Urban Outfitters are the same thing, the same billboard, the same commercial, and the same song and dance to separate you from your money. 3) I don't buy the stand up for the little guy plea for a minute. Just who the hell is the little guy exactly? I grew up in a city where teenage kids stabbed, and shot eachother over drugs. How many people are unemployed, and homeless in Massachusetts alone? How many people are getting squeezed by rising health insurance, and energy costs? The little guy is the poor motherfucker who gets snowed every day by shitty circumstances, and has no one to stand up for them because everyone is on the internet playing some teary violin solo over some kid who's goal in life is to get rich making designer t-shirts with pastries pressed on them. Think about it. 4) Does Ralph Lauren care about you? Does supporting Calvin Klein make you a better person? Does siding with Burger King over Wendys make a difference in your life? If I blew my nose on a t-shirt and sold it for $31.99 (THAT'S NOT EVEN A FUCKING JOKE $31.99!!!) would any one of you loud mouths stand up for me? Give me a hand up when I needed it? Throw a shit fit when someone wrongs me? Doubt it. 5.) $31.99 for a t-shirt. That's more money then I spend on food in a week. How much profit do you make for coming up with shitty ideas? Repost this a billion times. Delete me as your friend. Tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, that's he's the most stand up kid ever. Do whatever you want. I don't care. But in my opinion (which nobody asked for) you'd benefit a lot more from this situation if you pulled your head out of your ass, realize where you really stand in this equation, and actually learn something from this. Oh, and one more time.... $31.99 for a t-shirt. Sincerely, Mike "I Still don't like rapcore" Shea
