hungtableed said:
Why is it that white people are the only ones who are racist when they take pride in who they are? As someone who lives near lowell, I see plenty of Asian pride whom are not considered racist. In pop-culture (more specifically rap music) we see plenty of black pride who are not considered racists. What's up with white people who have pride in who they are being considered racist? I never lynched anyone, I never put any Jew in an oven nor have I ever condoned it as being even a remotely good idea. Why am I "racist" for being proud of who I am?
When people have Irish/Italian/Polish/etc. pride, I don't think anyone finds it offensive, but the idea of just "white pride," no matter how much you wish it wasn't, is associated with white supremacy. I can see why you say the double standard is lame, and I agree to an extent, but it's not that simple. Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. pride is almost never associated with supremacy, so it's completely different, so if the problem is that you'd rather say you're proud to be white than whatever nationality you are descended from, you're pretty much just out of luck, as dumb as it is. Like Lamp, though, I think all forms of racial pride are dumb. I can see being proud of people who belong to a group you belong to (like being proud of advances gays have made in the struggle for acceptance and saying you have gay pride), but being proud of yourself just for your classification is lame.
