ADVERTISEMENT S-300 missiles are longer-ranging than the TOR-M1 surface-to-air missiles which Russia, in a deal criticized by the West, earlier this year said it had delivered to the Islamic Republic under a $1 billion contract. Iran is under U.N. sanctions over its refusal to halt sensitive atomic work that Western powers suspect it wants to master so that it can build nuclear bombs, but they do not ban conventional weapons sales to the country. "The S-300 system, under a contract signed in the past with Russia, will be delivered to Iran," Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar told Fars News Agency, without giving details. "The timing of the delivery ... will be announced later," he said. The ISNA news agency carried a similar report. The United States and Israel -- Tehran's arch foes -- have said Iran could use the TOR-M1 system to attack its neighbors. Russia says it is a short-range system and purely defensive. Najjar said last month Iran would never launch an attack against another country but warned that anybody trying to invade Iran would "face a crushing response." Under Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian arms firms have aggressively pushed sales abroad as the Kremlin seeks to reassert its role as a global power in the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. Russia's drive to boost arms exports have raised tensions with the United States, which last year imposed sanctions on Russia's state arms trader Rosoboronexport for cooperating with Iran, a move Moscow has called illegal. The United States is pushing for a third set of U.N. sanctions against Iran over its disputed atomic activities, even though a U.S. intelligence report this month said Tehran had halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Iran says it has never had plans to build nuclear bombs, insisting its program is peaceful and aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more of its oil and gas. Russia said on December 17 it had delivered the first shipment of nuclear fuel to the Bushehr power plant in southern Iran, a step Moscow and Washington said should persuade Tehran to shut down its own controversial uranium enrichment program, which can have both civilian and military uses |

Putin already said he would not give up power (this being the last year he can rule as president) Russia has stripped civil liberties and has arrested dissenters and opposition parties to the Kremlin. In turn, expect war or some action with Russia. Russia and Iran? We could take them, but we'd be drained and thousands would die. We haven't launched a war on a country with a sizable army since ww2. With resources thinned out between Iraq and Afghanistan, and every other nation we have forces in, we would surly be unable to wage war against two professional armies, one with nuclear weapons no less., Not to mention China and North Korea would probably see it as opportunistic to wage their long planned wars on us. | ______________________________ [Dec 26,2007 3:26pm - Yeti ""] i don't worry a lot about China, yes they are a force to be reckoned with, but i don't believe its as feasible as everyone wants to believe it is. however a co-op involving Russia and Middle Eastern countries is something that i worry about, considering i bet we'd see dissention of allies due to their mindset of "you reap what you sow". the only thing that i won't push out of the equation, are the power that combined US citizens would have against an invading army. i'd put a lot of weight into rednecks, gangbangers, and the countless other nutjobs that hoard weapons around the US. no, we really don't know if everyone would unite in a time of crisis like that, but really, we haven't ever faced something like a full on invasion. i refuse to believe that we'd just bow down without a fight. i'll die before some fuckhead storms my house and i submit like a bitch. North Korea is nothing but a 5'0 squirt asserting himself as badass at recess. |

North Korea would be a virtual suicide pact because they would lose after causing a lot of damage to South Korea and China will NOT support them in a second war. China is still a defensive based military and could not launch a major offensive against the United States. Right now, an invasion of Taiwan would be a HUGE undertaking for them because their Navy and Air Force is not made for and able to logistically support longer range operations, in particular for extended periods of time. They would have to be purely asymmetrical warfare. |
