NEUMEIER ADDS FUEL TO FLAMING ROBOCOP RUMOR by Kevin Van Natter Source: Fangoria 05.03.2008 - A vague reference to the Robocop franchise in an MGM press release has led to some actual reporting. Fangoria recently spoke with Ed Neumeier, writer of the original Robocop, about MGM's intentions to continue desecrating what he created. “People have been talking about another ROBOCOP for a long time,” says Neumeier, who scripted the original feature with Michael Miner, as well as several episodes of the subsequent TV series. “It’s not the first time. People have been discussing it for years. ROBOCOP is currently controlled by MGM, but it’s a complicated rights situation that’s a little bit boring to get into. But ROBOCOP is something I would love to go back to at some point.” That still sounds a little vague but at least we know he's not bitter about Robocop 3 and Starship Troopers: Marauder has proven that he has the will to save a franchise he helped bring to greatness. “The people who made ROBOCOP 3 meant well,” he recalls. “It was an attempt by Orion, and the subject of a lot of debate, to make a PG-13 ROBOCOP movie. They achieved that goal, but the film just didn’t turn out well.” Still, Neumeier, who also has an untitled UFO script in the works, would love another crack at it. “A new ROBOCOP movie would be cool. I would only hope that whoever does it, even if it’s me, would just do a good job.” So, does anybody want Neumeier to personally swoop down and save Robocop by himself? Let's wait until he makes his directorial debut with his latest installment in the Starship Troopers saga. Then again, did Robocop or Starship Troopers need to become franchises in the first place?
