I'm glad you backed up your opinions with some legit observations, though. I guess ultimately it's a difference in opinion, though. While he's certainly not doing anything you'd need a graphing calculator to listen to structure-wise, I do give him credit for stepping away from the completely linear stuff. And again, some of his songs are a lot simpler than others. Some are far more complex. I don't find the music flat and soulless, though. At least not a good chunk of it. I doubt you'd know off hand, but I'm curious to know what songs you've heard.
I had a neighbor who was into Dave Matthews Band. He played it constantly. I have no idea what songs, or albums, but anything recorded 2007 or before, I think I've heard it :) There are some plusses to Dave Matthews. He can play his instrument. He likes instrumentalism. However, he also makes hollow works. I think he seems significant only because the norm is so goddamn bad. I'm one of those intransigent bastards who would rather just listen to Yes, King Crimson and a shitload of classical than worry about what's recent. It leads to interesting insights about music.
