US approves 1st stem cell study[views:3589][posts:32]_________________________________ [Jan 23,2009 10:53am - zyklon ""] A U.S. biotech company says it plans to start this summer the world's first study of a treatment based on human embryonic stem cells — a long-awaited project aimed at spinal cord injury. The company gained federal permission this week to inject eight to 10 patients with cells derived from embryonic cells, said Dr. Thomas Okarma, president and CEO of Geron Corp. of Menlo Park, Calif. The patients will be paraplegics, who can use their arms but can't walk. They will receive a single injection within two weeks of their injury. The study is aimed at testing the safety of the procedure, but doctors will also look for signs of improvement like return of sensation or movement in the legs, Okarma said. Whatever its outcome, the study will mark a new chapter in the contentious history of embryonic stem cell research in the United States — a field where debate spilled out of the laboratory long ago and into national politics. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090123/ap_on_sc/sci_stem_cells |

Good. I think we should also test therapies on prisoners, like the Nazis did, because it's one surefire way to get useful information without animal testing. |

I anticipate that he's going to run screaming from other scientific developments, and quash some of our more promising technologies which will come from military R&D. He's also dodging the big issues. People can still copyright genes. that's crazy talk my nillas |

He's off to a good start at least. I found my old Sepultura - Under Siege: Live in Barcelona VHS tape the other night. Live show from 1991. Man, that band used to be so good.... I saw the first US leg of the Arise tour, with Sacred Reich and Napalm Death opening. The pit during Sepultura was completely out of control. You don't see shit like that anymore. And then, during the most intense parts of the songs, they'd kill all the lights and turn on the strobe. Seeing some huge motherfucker coming at you in the pit with the strobe light going was awesome. Then I saw them on the final leg of the Arise tour 18 months later when they were opening for Ministry and Helmet. That was at a place with seats so no pit but that was the last time Sepultura toured when they were still a killer fucking band. Plus, the guy from Rigor Mortis was playing guitar for Ministry. |

Chaos AD was the turning point, but I think that album is still listenable and not that bad. And that is good news about the stem cell research. |
___________________________________ [Jan 23,2009 2:17pm - dreadkill ""] sepultura used to rule. i need to put up my arise poster at my band's new practice space. |

Pandering to the crowd, instead of offering difficult music? I mean, every idiot can understand "Chaos A.D." but "Arise" challenges them. |

Anything that ruffles the right wing / Christian tax leech / Bush-y fucks' feathers makes me spew whey from my nether region. Perhaps that's the only joy I'll get out of it once the "liberals" sell me down the river for a swastika and pack of chewing gum, but hey, gimme my short term joy. Gyad, this is SUCH a relief to AT LEAST hear covered in the news. |
