The 430EX can be fired with radio if you get wireless triggers. I have cheap ass Japanese ones I got from Gadget Infinity (I'm using the new ones, the Cactus V4's) that fire probably 9 times out 10. Obviously cheap but they get the job done for wireless without dropping hundreds of dollars. They are like 40 bucks, lots of fun. Good for learning off-camera flash, you can spend the big bucks later. If you get the 580 you can have your 430 slaved like Rev said, you're just at the mercy of the IR eyeballs needing to see each other. You can also get a cord so you can hold your flash at arm's length, the Canon cords are about 40 bucks on Amazon. I love mine. I do shoot RAW and I still use a flash, no-flash is pretty tough if you're looking to freeze motion. And while you're at it, stick that flash on 2nd curtain...it's in the manual. It looks like >>> on the back of your flash. That'll fire the flash at the end of the exposure and help you freeze the subject at slower shutters. I realize you didn't ask my input but there it is anyway. :)
