Any musicians here own a LANEY Amp?[views:13058][posts:52]________________________________ [Nov 14,2009 11:58pm - Troll ""] [img] A Marshall will never sound the same to me again. I think Marshall ought to step up their tone, lower their price or just get fucked. Your thoughts? |
_______________________________ [Nov 15,2009 12:18am - blue ""] The pro tube series are just as good as a jcm 800 pretty much, same with the peavey butcher/vtm. Marshall will never lower prices due to brand recognition. |
______________________________________ [Nov 15,2009 12:53am - i_am_not_me ""] I had brief experience with a Laney when my dad's old cover band's guitarist left his at the house for a while. Quite liked it. Can't for the life of me remember what it was. But it was good. |
__________________________________________ [Nov 15,2009 4:35am - madoakdevin nli ""] This is totally irrelevant, but my Emperor amp will be coming soon. It's basically a souped up JCM 800 preamp with two kt88 power tubes. It's gonna be the sickest 60 watter. |
_________________________________________________ [Nov 15,2009 6:47am - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""] I really like the sound and feel of Laney amps. Great bang for the buck. I can't see why Marshall amps have ever gotten popular. I genuinely think it has something to do with consistency and ease of use. You buy them and they all sound the same and even a fool can figure out how to make them sound good. To me, that's a piss poor reason to buy something that will dictate what your music sounds like. There's tons of great tone out there at better prices, why box yourself into sounding like every other shnub with the money to buy a JCM series? |
______________________________________ [Nov 15,2009 8:56am - joeyumbrella ""] JCM 800's rule... I understand wanting to not be into hype, but the amps sound amazing. I owned one a while back, and would buy another if the situation presented it.. A laney Pro Tube was my first head I ever had, so I have a soft spot for them. They sound massive, and are worth every penny for the reliability alone. And butcher/VTM's can get a marshall sound, but not really. I have owned both, and honestly... they suck. Pretty reliable for a Peavey, but a shitty copy of a JCM800. Definitely notice how shitty they sound if you could A/B them. But get a decimator and an 808, and you could make it sound halfway decent.... for shit amps |

It's basically a souped up JCM 800 preamp with two kt88 power tubes. It's gonna be the sickest 60 watter. Thats another thing I'd like to make mention of. There are so many good upstarts out there like Engl, Blackstar,Emperor, Wizard, Electric Amp Innovations as well as some not so new manufacturers that have gone under the radar like Soldano. They make great amps but due to the fact that they are hand-crafted one-by-one the price tags are ridiculous. So, on one hand you got comapany's like Marshall that can sell something thats been shat out of a assembly line in mass #s more cheaply than that of say a GreenAmp yet, you still end up paying out the ass for the Marshall name. And even still the GreenAmp guy has to charge out the ass too because he doesn't have the means of manufacturing their product in such a cost effective way....But ofcourse, you get unequivocal quality. Ultimately, I'd like to learn how to make my own tube amp and just phase out the need to rely on any of these guys. Until then, my GH100L seems to be getting the job done just fine. ________________________________ [Nov 15,2009 12:47pm - Troll ""] Its was only $400 more for the JCM800. Wouldn't have been any skin off my dink to dish it out. It was a matter off doing my homework and pluggin' in to various amps to find that Laney had what I was looking for. It's all about personal preference. |

______________________________ [Nov 15,2009 1:05pm - blue ""] Joey, I cannot agree with you on the butchers/vtms at all. They are JCM 800s with a 6L6 power section. I don't know how that can't sound good. And madison amps? Metal amps made by metallers? That is an insult to metal. Crap amps that will endorse literally any band that asks. And as long as the guitarist population is a majority of know nothing morons, marshall will reign supreme and the little boutique guys who make better clones stay elite. |

Calm down Blue. Mesa? It's all a matter of personal preference. See, I think Mesa's have a loose sound. Not the response I was chasing. A guy I was playing with a while back has one and I always tried turning his knobs when he wasn't looking. Hoped I'd get a better sound out of it. Never happened. Finally I asked him If I could plug my guitfiddle in to see if it was a it matter of pick-ups ....Nope. Asked if the tubes had been changed and they had within a recent time span. So they shouldn't have sounded so flat. Maybe was just the 6l6 power tubes. They just tend to sound sloppy to some. |

_______________________________ [Nov 15,2009 10:55pm - blue ""] Saying that a mesa is 'too loose' really doesn't help describe them. The model range is so wide, its unlikely that you'd not find at least one model that suits you. The only laneys that I've really liked were the GH100L and Protubes. Great bang for the buck amps. Though I still prefer the flexibility/added beefiness (due to the 6L6s) of the VTMs. Not to say I don't go for the british tones, I currently have a quad of JJ EL34s and very much enjoy it. |

Most notably Tommi Holappa of Dozer has a Laney on top of a 5150. and Matt Pike of H.O.F./Sleep uses a Laney and Soldano. Either they're using a head as a slave or like another channel via the effects loop?! I'm stumped. Anyone know about that stuff? I've never owned two decent heads @ the same time to be able to try that. Usually use the money from selling one head to buy the other. |

______________________________ [Nov 17,2009 7:38am - blue ""] Kt77s are generally a replacement for EL34s, an amp with 6L6s would get biased for KT88s believe. Regardless, KTs generally are going to give you a little more power/ thickness out of your low end. |

It sounds like all the dudes you used as examples are just using 2 amps at the same time. Just an ABY pedal into 2 rigs. I run through my Dual Recto and my Ampeg VH-150 simultaneously when I play in Dysentery, its fantastic for thickening things out in a 1 guitarist situation. |

__________________________________ [Nov 18,2009 10:29am - Martins ""] That reminds me. I fucking love the tele shape in a natural finish with no pickguard. My rack set up is nasty and is super versatile. I have my guitar split into two preamps, an ADA MP-1 and an Engl e530. Each preamp goes out into a Carvin TS100 stereo poweramp and each half of the poweramp into its own speaker in a 2x12 VHT cab. By varying the volume on each preamp I can have vastly different sounds...nevermind that I can have 128 presets on the ADA... and it's all analog. And nevermind that the Engl has 4 channels. I get a nasty bluesy tones out of it and nasty heavy tones out of it and nasty cleans (especially with the piezo on my Fly). The only thing I'm missing is a boost pedal in front of everything. Talk about a set up. Also those RedBears look/sound sweet. |
________________________________ [Nov 18,2009 10:37am - Troll ""] Actually I use to own a natural finish Tele w/ no pickguard, but because I don't play in a country band I gave it away to a friend in Sweden. Engl's are top notch! |

_______________________________ [Nov 18,2009 10:59am - blue ""] Isn't your carvin able to take different tubes in each channel? You need EL34s in the side with the MP-1. |
__________________________________ [Nov 18,2009 11:01am - Martins ""] Yeah, I was gonna grab some EL34s because the MP-1 side is way darker. I love the Engl with the 6l6s though. They're almost definitely biased cold too. I would bias it myself but you need two multimeters to do it and I only have one. |
