I read the book over the summer, as I know a number of you already have, and it chewed up my brain like the cookie monster on a vaporizer high. I saw the movie last night and they did a great job with it. I was worried about 2 things: 1. They were going to add some Hollywood CGI disasters and Michael Bay explosions. 2. Charlize Theron was going to have way too much to do with the plot contrary to the minuscule role her character played in the book. As far as the first part there was very very little along the lines of jazzed up Hollywood special effect devastation. There's a brief but pretty epic forest fire scene, and a couple of pretty elaborate establishing shots. Other than that the scenery is super desolate and muted. I think they colored it with every dreary and depressing color they could find in the Avid color wheel. They also kept the wife's role to a bare minimum. Well not a bare minimum, but they kept it from turning into a love story, and got Charlize Theron the fuck out of Vigo Mortenson's way so he could go ahead and be the fucking man without anyone interrupting. Very cool film that no one will see because everyone's girlfriends want to go see a teeny bopper vampire movie.
