i still don't understand why people get mad at other people responding to trolls.
seriously, why? I mean, let's say a troll posts a thread, and i respond to it. The thread doesn't make it any harder for people that aren't interested to get to the threads that THEY deem worthy. They aren't FORCED to read them, and they absolutely aren't forced to post in them... but they do. a lot. They always feel the compulsion to let people know that THEY shouldn't respond either. Which is a little weird.
Glad you asked. People scan your forum for activity, and respond based on what they see. A bunch of troll posts => readers are more likely to flake out, forum gets less real activity, people are less likely to come back. In addition, you're then using server time/resources on something that's crap. Imagine it this way: If you picked up a newspaper, and it had three good articles and one crap article, how much farther are you likely to read if the first article you read is meaningless crap? Even more, there's the broken windows theory -- although some claim it is "debunked" (retards) -- which is that if you see other people doing broken shit on a forum, you're more likely to do broken shit yourself, and/or bail out figuring it's an internet ghetto (interghetto?).
