Bad batch of cocaine that can cause users' skin to ROT is hitting the streets of New York and Los Angeles By Mark Duell The Daily Mail Online 22nd June 2011 There are plenty of health problems associated with cocaine to put off potential users - but, short of death itself, this is one of the worst yet. Coke hitting the streets of New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere is now cut with a drug that can cause your skin to rot off, doctors say. The drug ‘levamisole’ is normally used by vets to deworm livestock but it is causing cocaine users’ skin to rot on their face, ears and elsewhere. More than two-thirds of cocaine cuts in the U.S. are contaminated by levamisole, according to the Department of Justice. Six cocaine users developed purple-coloured dead skin after snorting or smoking it with the drug levamisole, a study said. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology report showed some suffered permanent scarring on parts of their body. Levamisole causes damage to blood vessels under the skin that results in the rotting, reported the New York Daily News. Study author Noah Craft said he is concerned this is ‘just the tip of the iceberg in a looming public health problem'. ‘We have had several more cases since we wrote this report,’ Dr Craft, of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in California, told KTLA. Co-author Dr. Mary Gail Mercurio, of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, described the problem as ‘very alarming’. She believes producers use levamisole because it can give a small high in addition to the kick of cocaine, reported the New York Daily News. Health warnings have also been issued in New Mexico, Delaware and Washington - as well as Canada.
