I'm planning on seeing it. Only because I fucking LOVE the 50s and 80s versions of the film. Hoping they didn't completely fuck it up.

i have to. just like i had to see the exorcist when they came out with 'the crap version youve never seen for good reason' and the texas chainsaw remake, etc, etc. i have to know. besides i was glad it wasnt a full on remake of a remake and that theyre actually doing something vaguely imaginative with it. too bad it'll be full of cgi but that's inevitable with a story like the thing.
but they'd better do this shit right. someone better slit their fucking throat, there'd better be an axe left behind in the wall , and it had fucking better boil down to the last two norwegians and not go off on some bullshit 'directors license' twist.

The Thing is one of my favorite movies ever created. i have zero faith in modern day film-making, and even though this isn't a remake, i just don't want to see some shitty bullshit associated with the name. but if i hear overwhelmingly positive reviews, i will wait for the DVD. i still don't want to pay 10 bucks to sit in a movie theater to see it.

I totally disagree. I feel that right now, animatronic and effects should have improved by leaps and bounds since the early 80's and studios should quit being cheap and make the film worth it.
Regardless, The Thing is one of my favorites and my curiosity is getting the best of me.

New issue of Horror Hound is all about The Thing reboot, 1982, original flick and the story it's all based from.

They made mention that the sfx dudes tried to use as little CGI as possible.

Fuck CGI movie makers need to go back to using real special effects and animatronics. The stuff looks and feels way more real than some image on a computer.

This. Also that dude slit his wrists as well. It was all frozen as he sit in that chair. Pretty sure its a prequel and therefore the Norwegian's story. This also means we will see what the fuckin thing looks like in it's original form. Im interested.

I'm thoroughly prepared for this to suck; the problem is that even if it's average, it will still feel like sucking because the Carpenter version is a masterpiece. That being said, if it can be pulled off, I'll be the first to cheer. No jump scares and more creepiness, plz.

Agreed! Looking back at the original The Thing movie there are a few scenes that look dated but a lot of the stuff is awesomely gross because they used animatronics slathered in vaseline.

I beat you Aaron, saw the 715 at Lowell

Spoilahs, don't read

First, extremely happy that they kept the theme song pretty much the same, the rest of the score was Marco Beltrami's interpretation of Ennio's style.

Negatives: The whole scene with the alien in the ship seemed useless, why was it trying to leave, I highly doubt it would have thought that it could go north without getting shot down.
I think they showed the creature too much, sometimes it was just too cheesy, like when the girl creature is running around. I feel like less would have been more. The cgi was tolerable but too much for a purist like me. The creature's sounds weren't as creepy, the one scene from the 80s that always creeps me out is the one with the long arms creature burning and making the deep moaning noise.

Positives: The characters are more likable and this you feel more sympathy for them when they die. Lars was a bad ass. They didn't create anything new to the myth, other than the it-can't-absorb-inorganic-stuff which was cool and added to the story. I loved the fact that the creature had more parts to it, much more insect like in some scenes and much more tentacled-toothed in others. There was also much more of a paranoid you don't know who is the thing element in this film and I loved when the Norwegians were trying to get their fellow Norwegian to side against the Americans.
The best part was the end credits where they tie the two films together, I think the one shot with the dog running was taken straight from the 80s version.

Obviously not going to match the 80s version but def a great homage and a good film, hopefully it inspires more alien/creature horror films.

questions left: Who was the dude who slit his wrists at the end, couldn't figure out which guy it was

if the helicopter crashes and the thing can only be killed with fire or ice, on as it is a cellular virus alien sorta, doesn't that mean that the one from the crash is still out there? Was that the dog?

What happens with the chick? Does she go to the Russian base? Maybe they could make a third film where she goes to the russian base and we get to see the commies rescue Kieth David and Kurt Russel and they team up and fight the creature. It would be useless but still entertaining, they could ratchet up the anti-communism theme, as the book the films are all based on is basically a metaphor for the red scare.

Bottom line, as a stand alone it is probably one of the best films to come out in theaters this year or in a while.

I liked it. I have heard and read critiques that note a lack of suspense when compared to what the carpenter film had, but I can't take that seriously. We know what happens after this. It's not bad film.

The British dude who they was originally blamed to have cleaned up the blood in the shower.

Obviously it can't be killed by either since ice just contained it, and after getting torched, the split-faced Thing is still alive in the OG remake to snag Bennings.

Next movie should just be Ramona Flowers being beaten, mutilated and killed by McReady and Childs. Who then proceed to dp her corpse and burn it after they're done.
