Their energy was fine, and clearly they were having a good time even if it wasn't the biggest crowd they ever played for. There were a few missed notes, but I just don't agree that they were "off" at all. Bruce was giving his standard stage banter, which ALWAYS involves the "I can't fucking hear you" kind of thing. I don't think it would have done anyone any good if he'd said "That's loud enough Boston, why don't you bring it down a few notches?!?" Besides, he fucked up too, during "The Prisoner". First he tried to get everyone clapping to the beat during the drum intro, then seemed to get a little annoyed when people didn't shout in unison during the guitar rests in the intro riff (ala the Maiden England video). But you can only give so many instructions to a stadium crowd in about 15 seconds and expect them to follow along. So he kinda fucked that one up a little, and I even think that's when the "Get your shit together" comment came. Get your shit together, Bruce! I'm not going to nominate this crowd for an audience participation award, but I think plenty of appreciation was shown for the band. And even though crowd energy is indeed a tangible reality of shows, a well-paid professional band like MAIDEN should be putting in like 97% even when only 50 dudes in the back are going nuts. I'll go out on a limb: even if last night was not the highlight of MAIDEN's live career, anyone that didn't have a fucking blast is totally jaded.
