What about the countless civil war references? How could Jebediah Springfield (aka Hans Sprungfeld) attempt to assassinate George Washington during the painting of The Athenaeum (1796) and then go on to found Springfield in Oregon which wasn't even purchased by the US until 1846? He would have been like 80 years old. BULLSHIT. BULLSHIT. BULLSHIT. |

And Quimby isn't at all a direct copy of at least 3 members of the Kennedy family. I always figured they chose the name 'springfield' because it's a popular town name in the US (kind of like nightmare on ELM street, because 'every town has an ELM street') but that it was pretty obvious they were supposed to be in a new england town. Only Futurama is real these days anyway. |

________________________________ [Apr 12,2012 9:25am - xmikex ""] Well here's the thing when it comes to whether or not there was ever supposed to be a "real Springfield." The choice to name the town Springfield was an obvious wink at the audience that "Springfield" is anywhere in America. It was the centerpiece of the social critique that was classic Simpsons. There were, however, murmurs and ponderings from Simpsons fans and the media that "Springfield" was supposed to be an actual geographic location and a number of obsessed fans tried to pinpoint its location through clues. Occasionally the show would sneak in a joke or two about the shows mystery location, but they could generally be interpreted as a joke on nosy fans. Mostly people were happy with the original explanation. Then enter episode DABF10 "Blame It On Lisa" in Season 13.... the early shit years of the series. The Simpsons goto Brazil because working with the entire town full of hilarious characters is all of a sudden a bad idea, and Lisa's Brazilian pen pal jokes at the end about Springfield's mysterious location, and Lisa says "it's a bit of a mystery, yes. But if you look at the clues, you can figure it out." Right there the whole situation changes and the show, the one that Matt Groening produces, comes out and says that there is a real Springfield. The shitty Simpson's movie perpetuates this idea further and it becomes a game of hunting down clues that we, the viewers, think the writers are leaving us. The important thing to note about what Groening had to say about Springfield, Oregon is that it was only the original inspiration for the show. Nowhere in the article (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/Matt-Groening-Reveals-the-Location-of-the-Real-Springfield.html?c=y&page=1) does Groening say that Springfield, Oregon is the real Springfield. In fact, he reverts to the original idea that Springfield is anywhere. “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do. Well then why the fuck did you let your show tell people that it was a real place? Why are we scouring every corner of every frame of every episode looking for clues that you SAID you left us? Its proof positive that Groening took a fucking nap for over 10 seasons of The Simpsons. He phoned it in and let his cash cow show run on poser autopilot while the OG Simpson fans ate shit. Fuck Matt Groening. |
