Owning a Venue / Bar with mostly metal shows

Lately, I've been heavily interested in the idea of possibly owning a bar or venue which has metal shows a couple of times a week. Of course I'm near broke right now, but this is a long-term goal.
I know it's a long stretch, but I'm talking to some of my friends about it and it is an idea that could eventually be accomplished down the line.
Question is though, as far as real estate goes, what the cheapest/most convienent area would be for shows. I think it would be awesome to have a solid bar that's mostly dedicated to metal with all types of beer.
Anyone down with this or have any recommendations?

Dude you have to think of the commercial location, capacity, liq and entertainment liscenses and then products and then the fire codes and then money. etc... I thought of it before and would love to have this happen one day! Someday!!

in attleboro?
I was thinking of an area closer to boston?
Come to think about it, even those some parts are bad, I'm sure you could get a spot in Brockton for cheaper. I mean, Brockton isn't that far from Boston and it's not too far from the South Coast cities.

What about you Rev, the you would only have to walk downstairs to take photos of the shows... then you could just set up a multi camera set up and have acontrol room. No more driving or gas or electric. You could just be at every show all the time!

Brockton is a good shitty area for place, plus it is clsoe to boston and Providence and a main high way... Like Deringers, which had practice spaces as well... Do it!! Then you could live there too!! SICk!

Get some shit north of Boston. There are like no good venues in this area. Somewhere in between Reading and like North Andover would rule not only for me but for all the other fags like me who have to drive into the city, past it, or way up north to see ANY good metal shows.

I mean, the "ideal" metal bar would have a decent stage, a nice sound, lights/effects a dedicated area for Distros to set their stuff up, a dedicated photography/video area, and a huge beer selection.
I think someone needs to dethrone Mark's Showplace right now. The Bombshelter's gone, O'briens ain't that bad, nobody really plays the Paradise anymore, the Skybar is gone.. KC's Tap is barely played at although I've heard nothing but good stuff about it, etc.
Someone needs to invest in a SOLID heavy metal bar in a good location.

Club 125 in Haverhill has been closed for a couple of years and that place was a great alternative and was always packed for shows

best thing to do is just get some local people together in bands and plan this crap out. once planned, the only thing that would stand in the way is the financing, which will be tough, but 1.) that was loans are for 2.) there's some rich people on this board

this has been a long term goal of mine as well. i always thought it would be fun to do this when i'm in my 40s, sick of my career, and not really playing in bands i take seriously anymore. i'd probably want to do it in the waltham area or somewhere else near boston.

then you're on the team. we need more people.. if this shit goes down it would be awesome.

the problem with all ages is that it poses a risk of losing your liquor license -- it increases the chance of underage drinking.
with proper management and security, I think all ages could be pulled off one night a week... like a thursday night or something. all ages all the time? no way. i like my metal with alcohol.

oh, and another idea I had for this place:

a few arcade machines. i'm talking games like Golden Axe II, Altered Beast, Ninja Turtles... you know.. the classics.

18+ I think is a good alternative to all ages. The Great Scott pulls it off. Whatever, maybe they'll lower the drinking age soon.

You could do it like the old Channel where the bar was seperate from the main venue and you could still watch the show on closed circuit tv

I still don't know how i'd feel about all ages. I mean, one of the things I don't like about the palladium is that it's all ages. too many jackass kids running around. but then again, money-wise, i'm sure it works out. but I like what MASlayer said, perhaps have the bar separated from the stage. but that might be a problem because a good number of people like watching shows FROM the bar. tricky subject

correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the bombshelter have the bar fenced off? the only way you could access it was with a stamped hand meaning you're over 21, right?

Area Venue (formerly Area 22) in Newport is for sale, it needs a sprinkler system before it can reopen. The place is my dream place, I need to win the lottery.

depending on the company it'll be around 30 grand for a sprinkler system that is up to code. ever since the fire, the code for bars/venues has been a lot stricter and the fire/sprinkler company's have been taking advantage. Trust me I know. I am a GC and recently I gutted a 6 family in New Bedford, they charged me 12grand to replace the main panel, "draw" up the plans to be submitted to the fire department, repair 2 lines, and put in 6 carbon/smoke detectors.

That said, there is a place in raynham that is for sale, it's right off of 44 by the walmart. They were closed because of the sprinkler system. I have been thinking about buying it.

Aril, another thing to consider is getting a place that already has a liq lic. alot of towns don't hand out new LL's. I am down for whatever, I've always wanted to do a place like derringers. The best metal venue I have ever been too around here.

hate to say it but BOSTON!! seriuosly, theres nothing in boston (the city)

Getting an LL in Boston would cost a fortune! and real estate in boston is fucking ri-cock-ulous. I agree with you, that in-town needs something, but anyone trying to do that would need millions in liquid/working capital. I would say that would be a great idea, but start one out of boston, show some growth and profit and then in 3 years try to open another spot in boston. I'd be all for it.

I know a number of things would cost a decent chunk of dough; however, in the long run it may pay off. The sprinkler shit and LL is always annoying, but with proper planning and/or loans and funds, this goal is definitely possible. I don't think I'd be able to do it alone, but I think it would be a great idea.

Dude I am down, like I said there is a place in Raynham that I've been eyeing, along with a friend of mine. It would be a perfect starter place.

Toss me in that plan as well if you want - I'm trained in management and risk management at the moment. My downfall is I don't have much money right now =\

rob, do you know the how many square feet that place in raynham is? and what place is it? is it where that old pool hall used to be?

It's Joe T's. I used to bounce there, kinda on call type of thing. A friend of mine from KRF worked there and she called me up one night and said Rob we really need a bouncer, so a couple of nights a week when they had bands I would go down there. The place would be a great location and the capacity is like 250 - 300.

[Sep 3,2008 10:15am - aril  ""]
Joe T's... ahh, that place! That's for sale? That'd be awesome.

As long as you don't do that silly nonsense that KC's Tap does about all the band members having to be over 21. I think that's pretty ridiculous. We can't play there because our keyboardist is 20. Its annoying.

[Sep 3,2008 10:22am - Kinslayer  ""]
It's needs to be a metal BAR first and foremost. A place that only does metal shows is cool but a local bar in the style of Duffs in brooklyn would be rad; metal shit all over the walls, awesome juke box, cool satanic atmosphere...but then a stage and sound system for shows on fridays and saturdays...
 ____________________________________
[Sep 3,2008 10:22am - Kinslayer  ""]
and $2 PBRs on tap is key so most of us broke-ass metal fans actually afford to go there a few nights a week...

[Sep 3,2008 10:23am - Martins ""]
Please no satanism. That just feeds into the metal stereotype that mostly isn't true. If God doesn't exist, neither does Satan.

[Sep 3,2008 10:25am - aril  ""]
Duffs is one of the inspirations for this. That place rules.

Cool atmosphere with good drinks. No butt bags for security / management. Preferably everyone that works there is at least knowledgable about metal and / or is a musician. That'd make the atmosphere that much better and more comfortable for the bands.

Well let see the staff so far would be me, Aril, and Brandon from BOE/Descent can't get anymore metal than that! The security would be the raynham PD and I am friends with the guys that worked there, we go to the range all the time and as far as cops go they couldn't be any cooler.
