Owning a Venue / Bar with mostly metal shows[views:41978][posts:239]______________________________ [Sep 2,2008 3:18pm - aril ""] Lately, I've been heavily interested in the idea of possibly owning a bar or venue which has metal shows a couple of times a week. Of course I'm near broke right now, but this is a long-term goal. I know it's a long stretch, but I'm talking to some of my friends about it and it is an idea that could eventually be accomplished down the line. Question is though, as far as real estate goes, what the cheapest/most convienent area would be for shows. I think it would be awesome to have a solid bar that's mostly dedicated to metal with all types of beer. Anyone down with this or have any recommendations? |

Come to think about it, even those some parts are bad, I'm sure you could get a spot in Brockton for cheaper. I mean, Brockton isn't that far from Boston and it's not too far from the South Coast cities. |

No more driving or gas or electric. You could just be at every show all the time! |

Somewhere in between Reading and like North Andover would rule not only for me but for all the other fags like me who have to drive into the city, past it, or way up north to see ANY good metal shows. |
______________________________ [Sep 2,2008 3:45pm - aril ""] I mean, the "ideal" metal bar would have a decent stage, a nice sound, lights/effects a dedicated area for Distros to set their stuff up, a dedicated photography/video area, and a huge beer selection. I think someone needs to dethrone Mark's Showplace right now. The Bombshelter's gone, O'briens ain't that bad, nobody really plays the Paradise anymore, the Skybar is gone.. KC's Tap is barely played at although I've heard nothing but good stuff about it, etc. Someone needs to invest in a SOLID heavy metal bar in a good location. |

The place is my dream place, I need to win the lottery. depending on the company it'll be around 30 grand for a sprinkler system that is up to code. ever since the fire, the code for bars/venues has been a lot stricter and the fire/sprinkler company's have been taking advantage. Trust me I know. I am a GC and recently I gutted a 6 family in New Bedford, they charged me 12grand to replace the main panel, "draw" up the plans to be submitted to the fire department, repair 2 lines, and put in 6 carbon/smoke detectors. That said, there is a place in raynham that is for sale, it's right off of 44 by the walmart. They were closed because of the sprinkler system. I have been thinking about buying it. Aril, another thing to consider is getting a place that already has a liq lic. alot of towns don't hand out new LL's. I am down for whatever, I've always wanted to do a place like derringers. Hence most Satanist movements are a rebellion against Judeo-Christian morality, like a hybrid between sexual liberation, Libertarianism and Ayn Rand style objectivism. I'd just read Nietzsche. He has all of the good that the above do, more coherently, but also provides for some aspect of civilization. Not the licenses, but the startup money. Mainly because if you want a business loan you have to show them your plan to pay it back, and unfortunately in this economy you might not be able to convince a bank that a "Metal" club could pay off. I agree that it could, at least if you took all suggestions into consideration, entertainment, booze, food, but it would be hard. So heres some more good ideas. Have the food be done by a chef who specializes in making things that are almost 100% whole made and cheap. LIKE ME I can buy bulk ingrediants and have a menu that uses the same two or three "Focus" items in a bunch of different ways.... AND if you just get a liquor license, you should do what all the smart bars in Germany do, brew your own beer, WHICH I CAN ALSO DO. We could keep a small room for brewing and i could brew enough beer that you would only have to buy the cheap shit to have around that people knew, and we would be known as a specialty bar that brews their own beer. Metal heads would love that. (I would grow our own weed to sell too, but we would have to change countries.... not that i am against that, metal is HUGE in Amsterdam.) |

I've been doing all grain because i feel the texture is just so much better than extract recipes. How do you roll, all grain or extract? And do you shop at modern home brewer outside porter? If not where do you buy your stuff? We've only been doin it for about two years now, or just under two years, so we've done a bunch of clone recipes, ya know, just getting the feel of what things to change in recipes to achieve certain flavor/texture. But i think we've done 8 original recipes so far. Mostly heavy stuff, coffee porter, a couple different imperials, and a couple pale-ish ales to try and have stuff that is ready to drink faster. How about lambics? Have you done any of those? I started reading about them and havent done any yet. I guess you have to culture your own yeast for a couple years to make one, but as i understand it, once you do that you can use that same yeast for numerous batches, with each one having slightly different characteristics. Do you know about this? Am i saying it correctly? So listen to this idea, i brew all my beer with my buddy Aaron, and we came up with this idea to brew using those flavor trippin berries. Have you heard of those? They make anything that's bitter or heavily acidic REALLY sweet, so we are gonna brew with the cheapest super high alpha acid level hops, with the hope that the berries will make the hops taste great as opposed to real crappy so we will spend very little on our hops. Granted, this beer would be a very strange one and we are not gonna focus on it, its more of an experiment than anything. We haven't done anything that required the belgian corker, everything we do is cap-able. How much did you spend on your corker? Have you ever aged anything in barrels? I have been looking at prices for sherry barrels, port barrels, and scotch barrels. Trying to figure out which would be a good place to start. We were thinking about using chips from a port barrel in our imperial to round out the strong dark taste with a little light sweetness... and we've even played with the idea of charring the barrel chips first (like we are doing with the oak chips) and seeing if the resulting smoked flavor will still retain the sweet port essence. God i love beer. I love brewing it even more than i love drinking it. |

But the fact remains that every metal bar in the world I've been to is just that- a bar, not a venue. Let the casinos be built and let the economy fall further down the toilet before putting money or labor into this idea.when the time is right, which will happen in a few years, buy a church whose congregation can't support its existence any longer and you will have the perfect setup for a bar in the secondary rooms and a stage in the main hall.security, hvac, and ramp-up considerations cater to this idea. |
