Have the bands given up on a Mass date? There weren't any promoters willing to sort things out?

They wanted an insane amount of money and had ridiculous demands for bands that no ones heard of. So no one was willing to waste their time and money.

I would gladly take you up on that if I didn't have a wife to answer to. Is $1,200 really all they want?

It started at $1400 and then became $1200. They don't want any local openers so good luck drawing people and they want to be able to use open flames in their "rituals" so good luck finding a club that will agree to that.

Define "open flame". Candles? Cauldrons of unquenchable black fire? Apparently St. Vitus can accommodate it. I see lots of candles in pictures. Would the band play in a basement as long as they were guaranteed their open flames?

Admittedly, I'm not versed in the arcane rites of booking. But, an average of $470 per band sounds reasonable considering two of them are coming from the polar-ends of the hemisphere. This is tempting.
 ________________________________
[Jul 19,2015 7:29pm - KEVORD ""]
Yeah candles I guess. No club in New England would ever go for that. Hence why they lost their original venue. $470 per band for bands no one has ever heard of is not reasonable. Especially 3 bands no one has ever heard of with zero locals to help draw. I think they wanted us to charge $20 at the door which means even people who were interested wouldn't come out and even if you drew 50 people which is a pipe dream you're still losing $200 + expenses. No real promoter would ever touch this show.

Out of curiosity, how do you gauge the public's interest? Does experience alone tell you what to expect?

[Jul 19,2015 10:48pm - NeverStopTheMadness ""]
Yes, all that KEVORD and Czarnobog posted.
Hetroertzen's set will be candle light only (Maybe even the whole show?). Multiple floor candelabras across the stage and on tables. NY and MD don't have the strict fire laws that MA and RI have. You can't legally use fog machines on stage here, so candelabras are out. Plus they needed a large/raised stage big enough to fit 5 band members and at least 1 6ft table, but ideally 2. Stage requirements ruled out most venues that would be willing to gamble on this type of metal show (O'Briens, Dusk, PA's Lounge, etc....)

The promoter is a nice guy, but all the demands weren't listed up front. Everything (aside from the guarantee) came 6 weeks after the venue was booked. Midway tried to meet some of the demands, but the "no locals" and high ticket price were too much for them and they walked. The show was originally at Middle East Up on Sunday, but then the promoter changed the date to Friday and MidEast wasn't interested. So I had already ran around for weeks trying to make this work, only to have it fall apart twice. I took that as a sign and walked away as well. I know the promoter contacted a lot of people and clubs in the New England area, but it seems like no one wanted it.

You need a local band to help bring in heads and a door charge that isn't stupid. Don't get me wrong, coming from Chile and Sweden isn't cheap, however most people wouldn't want to spend $20 to see 3 bands they've never heard before. I'm an exception as I love to shows with a bunch of bands that I've never seen/heard before but call me cheap, $20 is a bit high even for me.

Hell, a basement show that has a $20 head? No offense buddy but I doubt most basement show attendees will take that seriously. Hell, Alcest was gonna do the equivalent of a basement show back when they were at the beginning of their rise to fame and that show was a "suggested donation of $10."

That said, all power to you if you feel you can handle it. Though any new band that has gives these type of demands can't be fun to work with.

Yeah, If you book enough shows you get a pretty decent idea of what will draw and what won't. A bunch of no name black metal bands have very little draw.

I'm shocked the question in the previous post needed to be asked. Underground metal bands with worldwide record deals, 20 year back catalogues, and a somewhat decent live show have trouble moving tickets in New England, why would three no name non local bands have a chance.

For the record, claims of Hetroertzen being new are a bit inaccurate. Their current international exposure may be recent, but the band has been active for over a decade.

I simply had to ask how local bands, which perform regularly and may vary widely in quality, can bring in a crowd, whereas critically-acclaimed international bands can't. Frankly, it speaks more about the audience of the region in question than the bands, themselves. The drawing power is there, as other locations have proven, it's just untapped. The question is how to raise awareness, and that I don't know the answer to. From what I've observed and what has been reported, most of the crowd around here can't be arsed to leave their comfort zone. That's unfortunate.

Perhaps I'm an exception to a fault. I'm so interested in the international underground that most of the local scene goes unnoticed. I won't hesitate to throw down $20+ on a band from far away, even if they're just an opener. On the other hand, I seldom bother to see the same local acts over and over again if I've caught them before. That's just where my priorities lie.

Does New Hampshire or Connecticut have the same fire codes as MA and RI?

I have the "Crimson Terrible Vision" album on my iPod. It's good, but not skip out on all my bills and not eat for a month good. Everything I've heard since that record is much less good. And the drawing power is most definitely not there. Also, there are two bands that have even less draw as part of the package, additional costs that will not yield additional turnout.

Local bands of note can bring in a crowd because they have actually built up something for themselves locally (they also have the advantage of being from the area and can invite their friends). Anyone who has done any touring knows you will draw many more people your second time playing a given place. Same thing with locals who don't overplay and always put on a good show when they do play out. People start to pick up on it.

As much as we all love underground metal, the sad reality is that its underground for a reason. Not many people are into it. Thats all well and good until you need to actually cover some costs. Sometimes you can get away with it by stacking shows with bands you know will draw, to off-set great touring bands who can't get the numbers out on their own. The booking group I am apart of does that fairly often. But that's not an option in this case, no locals allowed. This is the kindve touring package that requires a superfan to swallow a $1,000 and deal with a bunchve headaches for it to happen. The other two shows they still have booked will lose money, guaranteed.

And yes, you are an exception if you'd throw down $20 for an international band that is unknown to you. Its hard enough getting $10 out of people for known underground touring bands. On the whole people suck and don't really care. Its a sad truth anyone who's been booking shows for awhile knows.

I'm more interested in an explanation from anyone who thinks this band's sound is better than run of the mill. They're no undiscovered gem, the only novel thing about them is their bold booking requirements - Which is only helpful for churning out message board posts.

More of the billing. I wanted to see this show because, ok, while they're not so awesome, they're still good, which is more than can be said for any of our local "Black Metal" bands. LvxCaelis are much better, and I like Ominous Resurrection.

As far as booking them - I admit I haven't the first idea how to do it. I can say that if I were in a band, I would play shows unless they were shows I specifically knew had a good and/or receptive audience, which automatically excludes Massachusetts (and New England, generally) if we're talking about taste, and I would furthermore only play with local bands who didn't blow massive ass.

Anyway, Alx_Casket, I'm surprised that this topic made its way to this circle jerk/auto-fellating forum. The only reason to come here even once a month is to see the SWA thread; everything else just indicates how repulsive the Boston-area/Worcester is, and the shitty shows that get thrown. I am STILL shocked that Crypt Sermon and Magic Circle played a show here in MA, or that Magic Circle are from here. I am also glad I got to leave before that shitty Century Media band fronted by the chick and backed by Immolation.

Which is why I lament the thought of the tour missing this general area. While we're far from a no-man's-land of international tours, we're still not on the level of places such as New York, Chicago, or Houston / Austin. Those areas have a special breed of maniacs, though. I would like to think that our area can reach such status.

If anyone would be interested in divvying up the expenses, I would gladly front $700 of the cost and devote my other resources however they may be of service. Any more than that and I'll be in the doghouse. My email is melancholicfix [at] yahoo [dot] com. No bullshit from me.

One man's no-name band is another man's crown jewel of the current black metal scene. As others have said, it's not just Hetroertzen on the show. LvxCælis and Ominous Resurrection round out the package to create something truly special.

Subjective tastes, indeed. Judging by your Last.fm you don't fancy bands of that sort as it is, but I'll share a few songs. Let me first say that I only truly appreciated these bands after listening to entire albums and immersing myself.
